Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
MOOSIC, Pa. - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders split a doubleheader with the Indianapolis Indians Wednesday night at PNC Field, falling 7-3 in game one and winning game two 3-1.
In the opener, the Indians jumped out to a lead in the top of the second inning when Eric Wood doubled to plate Wyatt Mathisen. Indianapolis would tack on three more runs against Justus Sheffield in the frame, with a two-run double off the bat of Jose Osuna and an RBI single from Ryan Lavarnway doing the damage.
Sheffield (5-4) was not his usual sharp self in the outing, lasting only 1.2 innings and allowing four runs on four hits, walking five and striking out two. He gave way to J.P. Feyereisen who turned in 2.1 scoreless innings for the RailRiders.
In the top of the sixth, the Indians expanded their lead to 6-0 against Raynel Espinal, with Lavarnway recording an RBI double and scoring on a Kevin Kramer base-hit.
The RailRiders struck in the bottom of the sixth against Mitch Keller, who allowed back-to-back doubles to Abiatal Avelino and Luke Voit, and an RBI double to Mark Payton to narrow the gap to 6-2.
After Indianapolis plated a run against Joe Harvey in the top of the seventh, Zack Zehner cracked a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh against Tanner Anderson to cut the deficit to 7-3. Anderson was able to retire the side without further trouble and closed out the Indians victory.
In game two of the doubleheader, the RailRiders jumped on the board in the third inning as Wilkin Castillo led off with a single and Ricky Surum doubled. Castillo scored on a wild pitch after advancing to third on the double. Surum scored one pitch later on a passed ball giving Scranton/Wilkes-Barre a 2-0 lead.
Indianapolis responded in the fourth as Mathisen homered, but that would be the only Indians' run of the game. In the fifth, Tyler Wade hit a solo shot of his own to extend the RailRiders lead to 3-1.
Nestor Cortes (6-5) got the complete-game victory throwing seven innings allowing only one run on four hits. He struck out three and only walked one. Wade paced the RailRiders by going two-for-three with the home run. Castillo also went two-for-three with two singles.
The RailRiders will begin their home series with the Norfolk Tides tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. For tickets and more information, call (570) 969-BALL or slide to www.swbrailriders.com/tickets.
