Providence Bruins News Release
Hartford, CT -- The Providence Bruins defeated the Connecticut Whale 3-1 this evening at XL Center improved to 15-10-0-2 on the season. Michael Hutchinson posted 24 saves, notching his fifth win of the season. Jamie Tardif, Chris Bourque and Christian Hanson scored as the Bruins earned their first win in two games.
After a scoreless first period, the Connecticut Whale took a 1-0 lead at 4:44 of the second frame. Chad Kolarik beat Michael Hutchinson for his tenth goal of the season. Just over seven minutes later, the Providence Bruins leading scorer, Tardif, tallied his fifteenth goal of the season at 12:06 to tie the game 2-2. Kyle MacKinnon and Carter Camper assisted on the power play goal. As the clock winded down to signal the end of the second, the score was tied, but the Whale outshot the Bruins 16-14.
The Bruins opened the scoring at 13:58 of the third period when Chris Bourque, the Bruins' point-leader, added his fifth goal of the season and third goal in two nights, to take a 2-1 lead. Rookie defenseman Zach Trotman and MacKinnon assisted on the go-ahead goal. The assist marked MacKinnon's second point of the night. Despite multiple chances, Hutchinson stood tall between the pipes and kept the one-goal lead. Hanson sealed the win at 19:15 of the third period when he tallied an empty net goal. Trotman added his second assist of the night as the Bruins skated away with a 3-1 win over the Whale.
Hutchinson's 25 saves were good enough for the win, while Cameron Talbot's 20 saves fell short as he suffered the loss. Providence went 1-for-3 on the power play, while the Bruins killed all five of the Whale's man-advantages.
The Bruins return to The Dunk on Friday, January 4 versus the Portland Pirates. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m. for Koozie Night. The first 2,000 fans in attendance will receive a free koozie courtesy of Uncle Bob's Self Storage. The P-Bruins' complete season schedule can be found on www.providencebruins.com .
