The Bisons dropped the first game of a two-game set in Buffalo against the Pawtucket Red Sox on Saturday

In the bottom of the first, Domonic Brown connected for a two-run home run, his second of the season, and the first dinger hit by a Bison at home so far in 2016.

That would be the highlight of the Bisons' offense, however, as PawSox starter Brian Johnson would settle down to last 5 1/3 innings, fanning five hitters.

Buffalo's starter Casey Lawrence didn't have as much luck. Pawtucket catcher Sandy Leon delivered a two-run homer in the top of the second to tie the score, followed in the third inning by an sac-fly by Chris Marrero and a RBI double by Chris Dominguez. A run-scoring double off the bat of Cole Sturgeon would extend the Red Sox lead to 5-2. Lawrence was removed after the fifth, surrendering five earned runs off six hits. He would be tagged with his second loss of the season.

Three Red Sox relievers would limit the Bisons to one hit in 3 2/3 innings of work, with right-hander Heath Hembree earning his second save of the season.

Though the Herd would allow two errors, they did flash some defensive skill. A sparkling play at by shortstop Jio Mier in the fourth, as well as nice plays by second baseman David Adams and first baseman Matt Dominguez in the ninth would try to keep the Bisons in the game.

Andy Burns, who has averaged .318 since his 0-15 start to the season, picked up two hits, including a double in the bottom of the sixth.

"You don't look at the average there, it's a long season," manager Gary Allenson said postgame. "If you just try and get one hit a game instead of three to get the average back up, it tends to help you relax."

"We've scored two runs or fewer in the last six games," said Allenson. "If you're looking for a silver lining, we're 4-6 and not hitting. So I don't think that's going to happen the whole season."

In a pre-game ceremony, the Bisons' Matt Dominguez was presented the 2015 Minor League Baseball Rawlings Gold Glove Award for his excellence at third base last season. Splitting time between the Pacific Coast League's Fresno Grizzles and Colorado Springs Sky Sox, Dominguez finished 2015 with a .990 fielding percentage in 289 chances at the hot corner.

Dominguez played first base for just the eight time in his professional career on Saturday.

"They talked a little about it in spring training," Dominguez said on his rare start away from third. "it's nice to move around and play some other positions."

The two teams will meet again on Sunday, with first pitch scheduled for 1:05 p.m. Chris Leroux will look to take the mound for the Herd against lefty Roenis Elias. The Bisons then head to PNC Field for a four game series against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders

BISONS NOTES:

The five runs allowed by Buffalo are the most the team has allowed in a game thus far...Jesus Montero and Dalton Pompey remain the only two regulars with a batting average above .300 so far this season....Domonic Brown's two home runs lead the Herd, with Montero supplying the only other long ball of the season.
