SWB Game Notes

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The RailRiders came from two runs down to score a 5-3 triumph over the Syracuse Chiefs last night at PNC Field. The team's five-game winning streak is its first since a six-game surge from Aug. 9-14 last season. That run began with a 9-1 win at Toledo, continued with a four-game sweep versus Pawtucket, and ended after a 5-3 win at Rochester. Last year's division championship team never won more than six straight. In fact, the only winning streak in excess of six enjoyed in the RailRiders era came with eight straight from April 29-May 5, 2013 in consecutive four-game sweeps at Charlotte/Gwinnett. Six of those eight went seven innings as part of doubleheaders during a rainy road trip.

OVER BEFORE IT...CONTINUED?: Bridging back to Tuesday's win at McCoy Stadium, SWB pitching had not allowed a run in 28 straight innings. The string concluded last night when two Syracuse runs crossed in the first frame on Matt Skole's double. It marked the longest string of consecutive scoreless innings in the RailRiders era, surpassing the 27-inning stretch last season from May 16-19. That run included the team's previous set of back-to-back shutouts: a 5-0 win at Durham on May 17 and a 3-0 victory versus Charlotte on May 18. SWB has not recorded three straight shutouts since May 15-17, 2009. All three of those games went seven innings as parts of doubleheaders in Moosic. The then-SWB Yankees swept Charlotte 1-0 and 3-0 on May 15. After rain postponed play on May 16, they opened a May 17 double-dip by blanking Columbus, 3-0. The last run of three straight shutouts in games scheduled for nine innings came from June 24-26, 2007, all in Moosic. It started with consecutive wins against Syracuse, 8-0 and 4-0, before a 5-0 blanking of Buffalo.

SLAMMING THE GAVEL: Aaron Judge posted a pair of hits including his first home run of the season, an opposite-field shot to right field on a 3-2 pitch in the first inning. Through eight games, he has slashed .343/.378/.514/.893 by going 12-for-35 with four extra-base hits. He has been particularly effective against right-handed pitchers (9-for-22, 3XBH, .409/.458/.636/1.095). Judge has hit second in all eight of the team's games thus far, something he did in just 10 of his 61 games played at Triple-A a season ago. Most of his SWB time last year came in the four (21 games) or five-hole (27 games). However, he mostly hit second at Double-A in 2015 (30 games) and at both levels his best performances came in the two hole. At Double-A last year he slashed .310/.370/.579/.949 batting second. At Triple-A, the numbers stood .333/.413/.385/.798.

SWISHALICIOUS: Nick Swisher signed a minor league deal with the Yankees and joined the RailRiders Thursday. Over a dozen MLB seasons, including four with the Yankees from 2009-12, he has hit .249/.351/.447/.799. An All-Star with the Yankees in 2010 when he hit .288/.359/.511/.870 with 29 home runs, he was last in the big leagues last season with both Cleveland and Atlanta. He went 1-for-4 with an infield single Thursday night as the starting first baseman. Yesterday, he went 2-for-4 with a go-ahead double in the sixth as the DH.

GETTING DEFENSIVE: A seventh-straight error-free game lifted the RailRiders' league-best fielding percentage to .997. SWB's lone mistake this season has come on a grounder to Rob Refsnyder at third base in the April 7 season opener versus Rochester. Last year's unit finished fifth in the league with a .982 fielding percentage. The franchise last led the league in fielding percentage at .983 when it did not have a home stadium en route to a division title in 2012.

OFF THE RAILS: Refsnyder extended SWB's longest hitting streak of 2016 to six games with an RBI single in the seventh...Last night marked Syracuse's first nine-inning game this season...Conor Mullee, who has had Tommy John three times, needed four pitches to record his first Triple-A save...It marked the second save of his seven-year pro career above Advanced-A...Mullee has stranded all of his three inherited runners after leaving one last night...The RailRiders recorded double-digit hits for the first time this season (10)...Reliever Diego Moreno (2-0) tossed a pair of scoreless innings for the win...He has not allowed a run in three outings and six innings while whiffing six...Donovan Solano was a late addition to the lineup after Cesar Puello was scratched...Donovan, the brother of Syracuse catcher Jhonatan Solano, went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in his impromptu start...The RailRiders improved to 2-0 in their new Glow-in-the-Park Friday night uniforms.
