Swift Current Broncos News Release

Red Deer, Alta. - Swift Current Broncos prospects Daxon Yerex and Sawyer Dingman both earned medals at the WHL Cup in Red Deer over the weekend.

Yerex and Team Manitoba went 1-2-0-0 through the Round Robin portion of the tournament and upset Team British Columbia in the semi-final 3-2 to earn a spot in the Gold Medal Game where they played an instant classic with Team Alberta.

Dingman and Team Alberta were 2-0-1-0 through round robin play and defeated Team Saskatchewan 7-3 in the semi-final to earn their spot in the final to take on the previously mentioned Manitobans.

The game was tied 5-5 through 60 minutes of hockey, and remained tied after overtime, which lead things to a shootout. Ultimately, it took six shooters, but Team Manitoba came away with the win and took home their first gold medal in WHL Cup history.

Yerex was held pointless through the tournament but was solid on the Team Manitoba blueline that swept the two All-Star team defense spots at the end of the tournament.

Dingman ended the tournament with one goal and two assists as he was part of a high-flying Alberta offense that averaged more than five goals per-game.

Meanwhile, another Broncos connection as Swift Current native, and Legionnaire defenceman Griffin Darby helped Team Saskatchewan win bronze. Darby is the son of current Broncos Assistant Coach Regan Darby.
