Warriors Open Busy Week in Saskatoon

Moose Jaw Warriors News Release

Moose Jaw, SK - The Moose Jaw Warriors will be tested over the next six days.

The Warriors will play four games over that stretch, three against East Division foes and two of them against the leaders of both the Eastern and Western Conference.

"The mindset is just handle what's in front of you," Warriors head coach Mark O'Leary said. "Big picture, it's a good measuring stick, we're playing some good teams and we'll know where we're at by the end of the week."

The Warriors open the week with a trip into Saskatoon to battle the Blades.

Saskatoon has started the season strong with an 8-2-0-0 record through ten games, which puts them two points in front of Moose Jaw for first place in the Eastern Conference.

"They're a good team, we have had a little rivalry against them, so it's an important game," Warriors forward Jagger Firkus said. "We understand they're in first place, which is where we want to be, so it's an important game for us to make sure they know we're a good team."

The Warriors are coming off a strong performance in Prince Albert on Saturday. Firkus led the charge with a hat trick in the 4-1 win over the Raiders.

"Going into that game, obviously losing two in a row, it was an important game for us," Firkus said. "The first period wasn't our greatest period, but Jackson [Unger] did a really good job of keeping us in the game and in the second and third we were ready to go and taking it to them."

Unger made 38 saves in Saturday's win, including 24 stops in the first period alone.

O'Leary said Unger has stepped up in his first season as the full-time starter.

"To me, it starts in the summer, I thought he had a really good summer, he came back looking like he really matured and when you do that, you give yourself confidence that not only can you play at a consistent level, but you can up that level and he's done that right from the get go," he said.

Tuesday night will be the first meeting of the season between the Warriors and Blades.

"They're a deep team and they manage pucks well, they play with a lot of structure and they do it throughout their whole lineup," O'Leary said. "That's the place that we're trying to get to, they're a perfect team to play at this time to see where we're at."

The Warriors and Blades square off on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at Sasktel Centre. Tune into all the action on WHL Live and Country 100, starting with the Pre-Game Show at 6:40 p.m.
