Wheat Kings this Week: Wheat Kings Return to Host Top Opponents

October 24, 2023 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

The longest road trip of the season may be in the rearview mirror, but the schedule isn't going to turn into a cakewalk for the Brandon Wheat Kings just because they've returned home.

Two of the top teams in the East Division, the Moose Jaw Warriors and Saskatoon Blades, will stop in at Westoba Place this week, beginning with the Warriors on Thursday, October 26. With that in mind, it's a good thing the Wheat Kings are finally getting some time to practice together after almost two full weeks away from home.

"We had two kind-of-practices on that road trip which were pretty quick, more flow stuff to get the bus legs out," said head coach and GM Marty Murray. "That whole trip was fast and furious as far as travel and games, so it'll be nice to get a couple of practices in this week for sure."

The first opponent on the list for the Wheat Kings is the Moose Jaw Warriors, who are 1-1 against the Wheat Kings this season. This will be the first trip to Brandon for the Warriors, and they come in having added to their roster since then with a blockbuster trade with the Victoria Royals. In other words, it will be no time for a post-road trip letdown.

"That's something that's always a concern, having that little sleepiness in your game coming off a road trip like that," Murray said. "It's something that will be addressed for sure. We have a quick turnaround here."

After a day off on Friday, the Wheat Kings will welcome the Blades to town for the first meeting of the season. The Blades, at a record of 8-2, are the top team in the Eastern Conference as of this writing. With two tough divisional opponents on tap, this week will help show the Wheat Kings where they stand and what they need to do.

"The next three will be really challenging," Murray said. "Probably three of the best teams in the league right now with Moose Jaw, Saskatoon, and Prince George. It's a homestand but we're going to have to be at our best and playing the game the right way."

The game against the Warriors will be Turn Back the Clock night as the Wheat Kings celebrate their rich history and heritage. Tickets for that game are available HERE.

After that, Saturday's home game against the Blades will be Willie's Birthday! Fans are encouraged to come in their Halloween costumes and take part in some indoor trick-or-treating. Tickets for that game are available.
