Swift Current Broncos News Release

It was Fan Appreciation Night at the Innovation Credit Union i-Plex on Friday evening as the Swift Current Broncos welcomed the Moose Jaw Warriors for their final home game of the 2018-19 regular season.

The Broncos honoured the players in a special pre-game ceremony in which individual awards were issued to skaters such as the Most Improved Player, Best Defenceman and Team MVP amongst 15 awards.

When it got to game time, Swift Current came out with energy in the first period and outshot the Warriors by a 9-4 margin but unfortunately gave up a shorthanded breakaway goal to Justin Almeida.

The Warriors boosted up in front 2-0 when Carson Denomie scored early in the second period. Keenan Taphorn delivered for the Warriors their third goal when he received a cross-ice feed from Almeida and tucked it by Broncos goaltender Riley Lamb from the door step.

A Warriors power play saw Almeida roof in his 32nd of the season and second of the night to make it a 4-0 game. The score stood at 4-0 Moose Jaw in what was a very physical period as both teams committed plenty of hits.

With it being 5-0 Moose Jaw, the Broncos got on the board when 17-year-old defenceman Connor Horning slapped in his eighth of the season from the top of the point. Tyler Lees and Ben King registered assists on the power play goal from the Kelowna, BC product.

Moose Jaw forward Josh Brook netted the Warriors sixth goal to send the Broncos to a 6-1 loss.

Shots on goal were 27-24 in favour of Moose Jaw. The Warriors power play went 1/8 while the Broncos finished 1/6 on the night.

After the game, the Swift Current Broncos paid tribute to their three 20-year-old graduating players Tanner Nagel, Matt Stanley and Riley Lamb with special gifts. They were also honoured by being named the three stars of the game in front of a crowd of 2,800 spectators that were in attendance.

The 2018-19 season concludes on Saturday, March 16th when Swift Current duels Moose Jaw at Mosaic Place. Puck drop is set for 7:00pm MT.
