Bridgeport Islanders News Release
ALBANY, N.Y. - The Sound Tigers first winless streak of the season is now at four as the Albany Devils downed Bridgeport on Sunday afternoon at Times Union Center, 5-2.
The Sound Tigers found themselves in penalty trouble early on in the game, as Scott Mayfield went to the box for interference just 2:34 in. Just six minutes later, Kael Mouillierat and Mike Halmo were both called on the same play, leading to a full two-minute five-on-three power play for the Devils.
On the two-man advantage, Mike Sislo found Paul Thompson near the top of the left circle. David Leggio was caught moving the wrong way and Thompson ripped home his 10th goal of the season to put the Devils up 1-0. It was Thompson's first game back since serving a two-game suspension.
It looked as if Albany would head into the intermission with the one-goal lead, but the third line for the Sound Tigers got a goal back late in the first. After digging the puck out of the corner, Justin Courtnall got the puck to Johan Sundstrom, who roofed a gorgeous backhander over the shoulder of Keith Kinkaid to knot the game up at 1-1.
But it was the Devils who took over the game in the second, scoring four in the middle frame. First it was Brandon Burlon firing home his first of the season over the glove of Leggio. Less than 90 seconds later, Raman Hrabarenka took a shot from the point that deflected off Sebastian Collberg and past Leggio to make it 3-1.
Albany added two more in the second, with Eric Baier and Ben Johnson each tallying their first goals of the season. Johnson's came while the Devils were shorthanded, as he followed up an attempt by Thompson and slotted the puck home. Both Baier and Johnson's goals came off rebounds in the slot.
The Sound Tigers got one back in the final stanza, as Mouillierat slammed home a pass from Halmo to make it 5-2 to finish the scoring.
Leggio ended the game with 27 saves. The Sound Tigers power play went 0-for-3 while the Albany power play got seven chances, converting on one.
Notes: Three of the five Albany goals came from defensemen...Three of the five goals for the Devils were the player's first of the season...The Sound Tigers earned just one point in three games this weekend...After not allowing five goals all season prior to last Sunday, the Sound Tigers have allowed five goals in three of their last four games.
