Brad Ross Extends Goal Streak To Five Games In 2-1 Winterhawks Loss

January 3, 2010 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Portland Winterhawks News Release

The Portland Winterhawks dropped a tight-checking 2-1 decision to the Everett Silvertips Sunday at the Memorial Coliseum.

Portland caught a bad break early in the game. Everett dumped the puck in from the neutral zone, and as Winterhawks goaltender Mac Carruth left the crease to play the puck, it bounced off the end boards right back into the slot onto the stick of Everett forward Clayton Cumiskey, who hit the open net to make it 1-0 for the Silvertips.

Portland got that one back in the second, when Brad Ross continued his recent scoring binge with his 22nd of the season at the 12:56 mark when he split Everett's defense and fired a shot past Silvertips netminder Thomas Heemskerk to tie the game at 1-1, a score that would hold heading into the third period.

The two teams played a hard-fought third period, and through most of the period it appeared the game was headed for overtime. But with just under two minutes remaining there was a scramble in front of Portland's net, and Everett's Byron Froese got his stick on the puck and managed put it in the net to give Everett the game-winning goal.

With his goal tonight in the second period Brad Ross now has a five-game goal streak, having amassed six goals and five assists for 11 points in that span. Mac Carruth stopped 30 of Everett's 32 shots, while Heemskerk stopped 32 of Portland's 33 shots for the Silvertips.

The Hawks are off for almost a week now, resuming play Saturday night against the Chilliwack Bruins at 7 p.m. at the Rose Garden.
