Blades Edge Winterhawks 6-5 In Overtime

Charles Inglis (Saskatoon, SK) scored with just 25 seconds remaining in extra time as the Saskatoon Blades defeated Portland Winterhawks 6-5 in overtime on Saturday evening.

Jeremy Boyer (Saskatoon, SK) had two goals for the Blades while Josh Nicholls (Tsawwassen, BC), Stefan Elliott (North Vancouver, BC), Derek Hulak (Saskatoon, SK), and Inglis had the other goals. The win gives the Blades three straight victories to open the team's six-game road trip.

Saskatoon - 1st - Nicholls (Burke Gallimore, Tyler Kizuik) 3:22 The second-year Blade forward opened the scoring early in the first period after taking a feed from Gallimore (Edmonton, AB) down the right side and deked to his backhand before sliding in his 7th of the season.

Saskatoon - 1st - Elliott (Walker Wintoneak, Sam Klassen) 7:20 pp Elliott put the Blades up 2-0 while with the man advantage after depositing his 13th of the year on a wrist shot from the point that beat a screened Ian Curtis.

Portland - 1st - Chris Francis (Ryan Johansen, Eric Doyle) 8:31 sh The Winterhawks cut the lead in half on a shorthanded marker by Francis just 71 seconds later for his 17th on the season.

Portland - 1st - Johansen (Joe Morrow, Ian Curtis) 15:39 pp Johansen evened the score on the power play with his 16th of the season and 7th power play goal.

Saskatoon - 1st - Boyer (Travis Toomey, Darian Dziurzynski) 16:46 The Blades responded in short order on the first of two on the night for Boyer, who had a rebound pop out to him in front and backhanded home his 6th of the year.

Portland - 1st - Spencer Bennett (Doyle, Francis) 18:00 pp The home squad again pulled even before the opening frame was closed as Bennett put home his 14th on the campaign.

Portland - 2nd - Jakub Berglund (Johansen, Troy Rutkowski) 5:57 pp Berglund gave the Winterhawks their first lead of the game again on the power play early in the second period with his 5th of the season.

Saskatoon - 2nd - Hulak (Elliott, Klassen) 15:24 pp Hulak brought the Blades even before the second period was out after redirecting an Elliott point shot on the power play for his 17th of the season.

Portland - 3rd - Brad Ross (Johansen, Oliver Gabriel) 1:42 The see-saw battle continued with the Winterhawks again taking the lead early in a period on Ross' 21st goal of the season.

Saskatoon - 3rd - Boyer (Dziurzynski, Toomey) 18:04 Boyer brought the Blades even with less than two minutes remaining in regulation after a funny bounce off the boards saw the puck end up in front of the net and the 19-year-old made no mistake to make it 5-5.

Saskatoon - OT - Inglis (Elliott, Nicholls) 4:35 Inglis won it for the road team in overtime with just 25 seconds remaining in the extra frame. The sophomore forward tipped in an Elliott point shot for his 11th of the year and a 6-5 Blades' win.

Adam Morrison (White Rock, BC) turned aside 27 of 32 shots in the Blades' net to earn the victory between the pipes. Curtis stopped 43 shots in the Portland net in a losing cause.

Final score Saskatoon Blades 6, Portland Winterhawks 5 (OT).

With the victory, the Blades go to 27-7-1-3 for 58 points on the season and move into a tie with the Tri-City Americans for first overall in the WHL. The Blades also now have sole possession of first in the Eastern Conference. The Winterhawks go to 25-15-1-1 for 52 points and are second in the U.S. Division.

The Blades get right back into action tomorrow night in Kennewick, Washington against the Americans, their co-leaders in the WHL in points. Game time at the Toyota Center is 7:00 pm (Sask. time). The game can be heard live on 92.9 The Bull. Fans can also purchase the contest on WHL WebTV.
