Portland Sea Dogs News Release
Portland, Maine - The Bowie Baysox (27-29) scored six unearned runs on three Sea Dogs' (21-37) errors in the sixth inning and held on late to 7-5 win in the rubber match on Thursday afternoon in front of 6,920 fans at Hadlock Field.
With Portland leading 2-1 after five, Bowie sent all nine to the plate in the sixth and scored six runs on four hits and three Portland errors. Audry Perez had the big blow with a three-run homer over the Maine Monster off of Matt Kent (L, 3-4).
Kent retired the first 13 batters he faced before allowing a solo homer to Ryan Mountcastle in the fifth inning. He was on the mound for the full sixth and allowed four hits, but all six runs were unearned as a result of the errors. Kent fanned seven and walked none.
Brian Gonzalez (W, 1-2) earned his first win of the year with six innings of two-run ball. The lefty allowed six hits and walked two while striking out four.
Danny Mars hit an RBI double in the third off of Gonzalez to give Portland the early 1-0 lead. Jeremy Rivera had a wall-ball RBI double in the fifth, while Jantzen Witte scored Portland's third run on a wild pitch by Matthew Grimes in the eighth.
The Sea Dogs brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth with four hits in the inning, including RBI singles by Deiner Lopez and Jantzen Witte off of Tanner Chleborad. Branden Kline (S, 1) entered the game with two on and two out and got Josh Ockimey to fly out to deep left center to end the ballgame.
Trey Ball (2 IP) and Josh Taylor (1 IP) combined to work the final three innings for Portland and held Bowie scoreless.
The Sea Dogs open up a three-game weekend series with the Akron RubberDucks (Indians affiliate) on Friday night at Hadlock Field. Righty Teddy Stankiewicz (5-5, 5.43) takes the mound for Portland against Akron righty Aaron Civale (2-1, 2.51). First pitch is 7:00 PM for the series opener.
