Trenton Thunder News Release
The Thunder took an early lead but could not hold it, falling by a score of 6-3 to the Richmond Flying Squirrels on Thursday night in front of a crowd of 5,402 at ARM & HAMMER Park.
Jeff Hendrix led off the bottom of the first inning for the Thunder (34-24) by reaching on a throwing error by Flying Squirrels (29-26) third baseman Jonah Arenado. After a single by Abiatal Avelino, Hendrix advanced to third on an errant pickoff throw by right-hander Chase Johnson, then scored on a groundout by Ryan McBroom.
But Richmond tied the score in the third off lefty Ryan Bollinger on a Miguel Gomez RBI-single, and Ryan Howard followed with a fielder's choice grounder to plate the go-ahead run from third.
Bollinger struggled in the fourth inning and was unable to complete the frame, allowing four more runs on five hits, including a two-run homer by Jerry Sands before being pulled after three and two-thirds innings of work. The six runs allowed were a season-high for Bollinger, who also surrendered six hits and three walks, both of which matched season-highs.
Trenton fought back with two runs in the bottom of the fifth off reliever Frank Rubio, as Trey Amburgey delivered an RBI-double and Avelino contributed a run-scoring groundout. Rubio, however, held the Thunder scoreless in each of the next three innings.
James Reeves pitched three perfect innings in relief for the Thunder, and Caleb Frare pitched a perfect top of the ninth to keep Trenton within three runs.
In bottom the ninth inning, Chace Numata and Jeff Hendrix hit back-to-back two-out singles to bring the tying run to the plate against closer Caleb Simpson, but Amburgey grounded out to short, ending the game and handing Richmond the rubber-game victory.
Your Thunder continue their homestand on Friday night at 7pm as they open a three-game series against the Binghamton Rumble Ponies. RHP Brian Keller (4-4, 3.27) will start for the Thunder, and RHP Marcos Molina (1-5, 5.66) will go for Binghamton. The first 1,525 fans ages 14 and up will receive a Kevin Youkilis bobblehead, and the evening will also feature the inaugural "Sandwich Showdown," as the Thunder take the field as the Thunder Pork Roll, with Binghamton playing as the Binghamton Spiedies. Tickets are available by phone at 609-394-3300 or online at TrentonThunder.com.
