Hershey Bears News Release
The BEARS won the club's seventh straight game, defeating the Bridgeport Sound Tigers in dramatic fashion Saturday night 6-5. The win was the seventh straight for the BEARS, and put the Chocolate and White back in first place in the East Division with eight games remaining.
HERSHEY led off the scoring early in the first period with a goal by Chris Bourque. The goal came at 6:21 of the first, with assists from Matt Hendricks and Tim Wedderburn. Bridgeport would score the next two markers, with former BEARS defenseman Mark Wotton and rookie James Sixsmith scoring to give the Sound Tigers a brief 2-1 lead. HERSHEY would storm back to score three unanswered goals to end the period with Alexandre Giroux scoring his 39th of the year at 15:01 to tie the game at 2-2. Joey Tenute gave the BEARS the lead at the 17:00 mark with his 24th goal of the season before Bourque scored his second of the game and 22nd of the year at 18:01. Bourque's goal was short-handed, and assisted by Dave Steckel. HERSHEY fired 15 shots at Bridgeport goaltender Billy Thompson in the first 20 minutes, and took a 4-2 lead to intermission.
Bridgeport would score the only goal of the second period, doing so with a five-on-five tally at 3:36 of the period. Gregg Johnson fired a shot from the left circle low to the glove side of Maxime Daigneault to bring the Tigers back within one at 4-3. The third period featured comebacks from both sides, but the BEARS certainly had the more dramatic of the two. The Sound Tigers tied the game at 3:55 of the third when Jamie Johnson scored his sixth of the season. Bridgeport then took the lead late when Sixsmith scored his second of the game and his pro career at 16:38. Just nine seconds later, Bourque finished a hat trick at 16:47 to tie the game at 5-5. It wouldn't be long before the BEARS would find the game winner, when Quintin Laing scored his 15th of the year at 17:09 to put the victory on ice. The win was HERSHEY'S 46th of the season, and coupled with a 5-3 Norfolk loss in Albany propelled the BEARS into first place by themselves with eight games to play. HERSHEY has 104 points with eight remaining; Norfolk 103 with six left and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton has 98 points and eight games to go.
