Wheeling Nailers News Release

Wheeling, W.Va.-- The Nailers couldn't find the back of net falling to the Gwinnett Gladiators 3-0 Friday night as their 3 game winning streak came to a close. It came down to one decisive goal as the Gladiators tacked on two empty netters at the end of the game. The Nailers fall to a record of 11-12-2 and the Gladiators improve to 12-7-3. The Nailers are 1-2-0 against the Gladiators for the season.

Former Nailer Danny Taylor led the way against his former team with an impressive 40 save shutout performance as Wheeling kept blasting away only to be turned aside time and time again.

Michael Forney charged out of the penalty box and was hit right on the tape for a breakaway after 46 scoreless minutes for Gwinnett. He tucked it in past Nailers' goalie Brad Thiessen around his left-skate for his first goal of the season to give the Gladiators a 1-0 lead.

The goal came moments after Wheeling had Colin Power race out of the box joining a 4-on-2 rush but yet again the Nailers were unable to get it past Taylor. Wheeling had a few breakaway opportunities and Ryan Hillier had two great chances in the 3rd of his own. Hillier hit the far post behind Taylor in the opening minute of the 3rd period and later was right in front with a big shot that was denied by the quick glove-hand reach of the Gladiators netminder.

Wheeling had outscored their opponents 18-4 in their 3-game win streak including a pair of 7 goal games In which they appeared to be firing on all cylinders but this one just wasn't their night.

Nailers goalie Brad Thiessen (2-2-0) deserved a better fate as he only got beat the one time on the clean breakaway. He stopped 27 of 28 Gwinnett shots he faced in the losing decision.

Tom Zanoski raced up the right wing for the Gladiators and rifled it in to the open net to put the Gladiators up 2-0 with 52 seconds left in the 3rd.

As time expired Sam Roberts shot it into the open net and it crossed the line just before the horn sounded to give the Gladiators their third goal.

The Nailers are back in action Saturday at Kalamazoo for a 7:30 game and then have a quick turnaround for their next home game Sunday afternoon at 3:05 against Gwinnett.

Sunday's home game is the Nailers last at WesBanco Arena in two weeks. After a 3-game series in Florida the Nailers break for the holiday and won't play in Wheeling again until Sunday, December 27th against Elmira and Thursday, December 31st against Toledo in the annual New Year's Eve game.

Sunday it's Ko-Sports Ice of Dreams Night and Sunday Family FunDay featuring a post-game skate with Santa. Be sure to bring your skates and gloves...and don't forget the camera!
