
Charlotte Topples 'Blades 4-1

Estero, Fl-- The Florida Everblades and the visiting Charlotte Checkers played game 2 of a 3 game series Friday night at Germain Arena. The 'Blades opened the scoreless first period with a show of speed ad intensity. The second period witnessed Charlotte scoring with from Jean-Philipp Chabot and Kenny Roche. Florida made it within one when A.J. Thelen beat Ryan Munce. The third saw Charlotte score 2 more goals, 1 power play and an empty netter. The âBlades outshot Charlotte 33-22, but fell 4-1.
The Eveblades came out with speed and intensity in the first period. There were a couple of good shots on goal before newcomer Paul Healey was called for high sticking and placed in the sin bin for a double minor, four minute penalty. The penalty kill unit went to work and held the Checkers scoreless. It looked like Charlotte was going to get on the board first, but Mike Morrison made a beautiful save. Brandon Buck had an opportunity to score a short-handed marker, but Charlotte goalie Ryan Munce saw it coming and used a pad save to block the shot. With 2:43 remaining Ross Carlson was sent to the box. Brandon Buck had a breakaway short-handed opportunity, but was again denied by Ryan Munce. Neither team scored, but the Everblades outshot the Checkers 9-7.
The second period opened with the Charlotte Checkers notching one on the board at 17:59 from Jean-Philipp Chabot with assists to Chris Chappell and Kevin Schaeffer. Jordan Morrison had a break-away chance, but his shot went wide. The Everblades didn't recover quickly enough and Kenny Roche went into a sprint to the other end beating net minder Mike Morrison to make it 2-0. Florida had its first power play opportunity at 13:19 when Mike Taylor was called for tripping. The âBlades then had a 5 on 3 opportunity when Steve Ward was penalized two minutes for holding the stick. Right as the first penalty expired A.J. Thelen with help from Brandon Buck and Jordan Morrison, scored to make it 2-1. Matt Duffy was awarded a late penalty for hooking that carried 1:17 into the third.
The Everblades killed off the remainder of the penalty and continued in their efforts to tie the game. Veteran Paul Healey was called for slashing at 13:24 giving Charlotte its sixth power play opportunity. David Marshall cashed in on the power play and gave the Checkers a 2 goal lead at 14:58; Chris Snavely was credited with the assist. Florida went of the power play and pulled goalie Mike Morrison while the âBlades were deep in the Checkers end. Randy Rowe broke free with the puck and sunk it deep into the Everblades empty net for a final score of 4-1.
