Dayton Bombers News Release
Dayton, OH- The Dayton Bombers came from behind twice (overcoming a 2-1 deficit in the second period and a 3-2 deficit in the third period) during the continuation of yesterday's game to defeat the Columbia Inferno 4-3 in overtime at the Nutter Center on Monday Morning.
The two teams had to wait until 10:30 this morning to resume play with 16:13 left in the second period after the game was postponed yesterday when ECHL referee, Nick Suhy, noticed that the ice was starting to melt inside of the goaltender's crease and stopped play because he felt the conditions were dangerous for both goaltenders (Dan LaCosta for the Bombers, Robert Gherson for the Inferno). The Nutter Center ice crew did everything possible to correct the problem; however, the only realistic solution became additional hours necessary for the ice to properly freeze. Both teams were sent to the locker room and fans were advised of the postponement.
The Bombers had a 1-0 lead after the first period and for the first 3:47 of the second period due to Matt Herniesen's unassisted goal (10) at the 9:05 mark of the opening period of play. When play resumed this morning, the Bombers still had a 1-0 lead but Columbia tied the game early at the 4:33 mark on the power play on a goal by Inferno forward Owen Fussey. The Inferno then took their first lead of the game less than two minutes later when a shot from Mac Faulkner deflected off a Bomber and into the net to give Columbia a 2-1 lead at the 6:06 mark of the second period.
Almost immediately following the Inferno go ahead goal, the Bombers answered right back to tie the game again. Yannick Tifu (18) extended his points streak to 11 games by making a quick move on Gherson and wrapped the puck around the top of the goal mouth and into the back of the net at the 7:00 mark. Columbia would retake the lead later in the second on a rocket shot from the point off the stick of forward Luke Fulghum to give the Inferno a 3-2 lead at the 12:47 mark. The Bombers had their chances to tie the game again, out shooting the Inferno 18-8 in the second, but Columbia hung onto the lead after 40 minutes of playing time.
The Inferno came out with a defensive strategy in the third, but the Bombers still managed to get off 11 shots on goal, however so did the Inferno. The period was as even as it could get, but the heart of the Bombers came to the forefront when they tied the game again with less than seven minutes remaining in regulation. Tim Konsorada and Trevor Frischmon kept shooting the puck right in front of Gherson and his net, Gherson left a fat rebound and Paul Kelly (11) made him pay to tie the game at 3-3 at the 13:06 mark of the third period. Near the end of the period, Columbia received a power play, but Bombers goaltender Dan LaCosta made some key saves to send the game to overtime tied at 3-3.
It was all Bombers in the overtime not allowing the Inferno to register a shot on goal thanks to the relentless pressure the Bombers attack put on Gherson. Gaining speed off a perfect set of passes from Scott Ford and Paul Kelly, rookie Trevor Frischmon (4) gained the Columbia zone, made a swift move around his opponent and let go of a swift wrist shot that went inside the post for the game winning goal at the 3:03 mark of the extra session to give the Bombers the overtime win 4-3.
The Bombers are now 24-17-4 and with the win, they move into 3rd place (52 points) ahead of Toledo (51 points) and only one point behind Trenton (53 points) for 2nd place in the North Division. The Bombers will have a chance to catch Trenton for the 2nd spot tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. when the Titans come to down for the 3rd time this season. Tuesday's game will be another 2 for Tuesday sponsored by Prestige Ford.
