Bombers Drop Two Close Ones in Doubleheader
June 30, 2019 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Battle Creek Battle Jacks News Release
The Battle Creek Bombers dropped two of two today in a double header at the hands of the Rockford Rivets. The first game was a continuation of a game suspended due to rain back on June 19th. The game picked up in the top of the fourth inning with the Bombers ahead 4-2. Battle Creek would eventually give up the lead and lose the first game 6-5. The second game was also close but the Rivets would take that one 2-1.
In the continuation of game one, the Rivets scored first putting up one in the bottom of the fourth. After the Bombers started the day with four straight outs, Roy Thurman hit a solo home run over the tall wall in left field to regain a two-run lead at 5-3.
In the bottom of the 7th, with the score still 5-3, Rockford led off with a double and followed that with a single. After driving in one of those runners on an out the Rivets doubled and singled back to back again scoring two more. That 6-5 score would stand through the last two innings as the Bombers were unable to string more than two singles together.
In game two Lyle Hibbits took to the mound for a seven inning contest with the Rivets. Hibbits spun a solid complete game giving up four hits and two unearned runs, and retiring six via strikeouts. In the first inning Rivet first baseman Tom Josten reached on a fielder's choice and then after moving to third on a single would score at the hands of an Erik Owen error.
The Rivets second run would come in similar fashion. After Nick Juaire singled and stole second, it was a bunted ball that catcher Gabe Sotres would throw past Josh Sears to score Juaire.
After giving up two runs on errors in the first two innings, the Bombers would answer in the top of the third. A one-out double from right fielder Kolby Johnson would set up the Bombers well. Johnson would move to third on a John Malcom out and then score on a wild pitch.
The Bombers couldn't add to the Johnson run and thus fell 2-1 in the second game of the day.
Battle Creek is 1-9 in their last ten games but looks to bounce back tomorrow in the final game of the series on the road in Rockford.
