Dayton Bombers News Release

Dayton, OH- Two of the hottest teams in the ECHL faced-off Tuesday night at the E.J. Nutter Center.

The Dayton Bombers entered Tuesday night's game 4-0-1 in the past five games and continued riding goaltender Terry Denike (Loss 23 saves), although All-Star MVP goaltender Adam Berkhoel returned to the lineup. Denike won goaltender of the week this week for the second time in five weeks. The Wheeling Nailers entered the night on a five-game unbeaten streak.

The first period was exactly as expected; fast, hard hitting, and exciting. The Bombers struck early when assistant captain Paul Kelly (22) sniped a wrist shot over the shoulder of Nailers' goaltender Andy Franck (Win 31 Saves) at the 1:13 mark. The Nailers were not about to let the Bombers walk away with an easy victory and got their equalizer at the 8:48 mark on the power play. Defensemen Cody Blanshan(3) drove towards the net and smacked a rolling puck just over Denike's shoulder. As the physical play picked up, the Bombers had three power play opportunities and on the second Yannick Tifu dumped the puck for assistant captain Scott Ford who pushed the puck in front of the net for Joe Cullen (12). The period ended in a 2-1 Bombers lead.

Both teams continued playing excellent hockey. However, the period was scoreless with Franck stopping all eight shots that he faced and Denike stopping all seven shots that he faced. The Nailers were 1-23-1 when trailing after two periods; The Bombers 22-1-0 when leading after two.

However, the Nailers came out and surprised the Bombers. At the 1:51 mark, Bernie Chmiel (2) tied the game on a rebound goal past a sprawling Denike. Although the Bombers had 21 shots on net, Franck shut the door on all their scoring opportunities. Regulation ended in a 2-2 tie. Both teams picked up one point and the Bombers remained in first place.

The overtime period would not last long. On the Nailers' first rush, Blanshan (4) took a slap shot that went five feet over the net, took a bounce back over the net and hit Denike in the back. The puck had just enough momentum to trickle in and end the game.

The Bombers now head to Reading to face the Royals on Friday. The next home game for the Bombers is on Sunday April 1st against Trenton. The game starts at 5 pm at the friendly confines of the E.J. Nutter Center. Sunday's game is another McDonald's Family Night. Family packs include four silver level tickets, four $5 food vouchers, four Cricket chuck-a-pucks and a Bombers game night program for $48. Sunday will also be the final player card set giveaway, with the players on those cards appearing for a post game autograph session outside of the locker room area.
