Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
GREENSBORO, NC - The Lakewood BlueClaws blanked the Greensboro Grasshoppers 7-0 in the final game of the two teams 4 game series on Thursday evening. The offense was fantastic as they smacked 17 hits in the game including 3 Home Runs, 1 each by Anthony Hewitt, Jim Murphy, and Domingo Santana. The defense was fantastic turning 2 double plays, committing no errors, and chipping in with a caught stealing of 2nd base. And finally, the pitching was magnificent as SP David Buchanan continued his unbelievable start to 2011 going 7 innings, allowing just 1 hit, 3 walks, and no runs while striking out 4. He is now 5-1 on the year, and he has lowered his ERA to a miniscule 1.51 on the year. It was a fantastic game all around for the BlueClaws.
Enough can't be said about how well Buchanan has pitched as of late. He followed up his 9-inning complete game 1 run effort from Saturday with a 7-inning 1 hit shutout performance Thursday. Buchanan did not allow a runner to advance past 2nd base in the ballgame, and erased 2 of the 4 base runner he allowed in all (1 on a caught stealing and the other on a line drive double play to the SS). Colby Shreve and Juan Sosa each came out of the bullpen for Lakewood to shut door on the Grasshoppers. Shreve walked one batter in the 8th, and Sosa allowed a single in the bottom of the 9th, but they both stranded the runner and ended up with a scoreless inning to their credit.
The BlueClaws offense was unreal Thursday night as well stringing together base hit after base hit and smacking 3 HR's. DH Anthony Hewitt scored the only run Lakewood needed with a solo HR to lead off the 2nd inning, and chipped in with 2 more hits including a 2 RBI single in the 7th inning as Hewitt was 3-5 in the ballgame in all. Hewitt was far from being the only star offensively for Lakewood on Thursday however. Jim Murphy hit his League Leading 10th HR of the year and was 2-4 in the game, Edgar Duran was 3-5 with 3 singles, Cameron Rupp was 205 with an RBI, and Domingo Santana smacked his 4th HR of the year in the 9th and he also doubled.
It was a rough night for Greensboro as they didn't pitch all that well, they only managed 2 hits in the game, and hit into 2 double plays. Lakewood is now just a game under .500 at 16-17 on the year and they have now won 2 in a row. The BlueClaws will try to win their 3rd game in a row for the first time in 2011 as they will welcome the Hagerstown Suns and the top prospect in baseball Bryce Harper to town for a 4 game series beginning Friday. LHP Jesse Biddle will get the start for Lakewood as he tries to make it 2 wins in a row for himself and RHP Jared Rogers will get the ball for Hagerstown. It is sure to be an exciting night at FirstEnergy Park on Friday with Bryce Harper in town, and there will be Postgame Fireworks courtesy of Toyota/Scion World of Lakewood. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm Friday.
