Florida Everblades News Release
PENSACOLA, FL - The Florida Everblades (22-14-3) used a pair of third period goals and 39 saves by goaltender Justin Peters to blank the Pensacola Ice Pilots (16-21-3) for a 2-0 victory on Saturday night at the Pensacola Civic Center front of a crowd of 4,691. The shutout was the first of the year for Peters and the second of the season for the Everblades, who improved to 5-1-1- vs. Pensacola this season with the win.
After a scoreless first period that saw Pensacola out-shoot the Everblades 12-7, the teams also played to a scoreless second period as well. The goaltenders ruled the night over the first 40 minutes with Peters stopping all 26 shots he had faced and Pensacola goalie Cam Ellsworth turning away all 15 shots he faced.
The first goal of the contest came quickly into third period when Derek Damon converted on a power play goal just 1:03 into the frame. Damon's 16th goal of the season came after Mathieu Melanson had a quality chance at the right side of the goal cage, but clanked it off the right post. The puck however ricocheted out to Damon in the high slot where he wristed a quick shot into the upper left corner of the net.
The Everblades then extended their lead to 2-0 at 9:15 of the third period when Melanson deflected a shot from the top of the right circle by Steve Ward. Preston Callander also added an assist on Melanson's team-leading 20th goal of the season.
From there Peters took care of the rest, turning away a total of 13 shots in the final period to earn the win and improve to 14-7-2. Ellsworth (8-17-1) suffered the tough-luck loss, allowing the two goals on 26 shots.
On the power play, the Everblades closed out night 1-for-6, while the Ice Pilots finished 0-for-6.
