Fresno Falcons News Release
Victoria, British Columbia - Kenny Bernard scored a shorthanded goal 2:52 into overtime as the Fresno Falcons rallied for a 3-2 win over the Victoria Salmon Kings on Saturday in front of 5,417 fans at Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre.
A pair of special teams goals early in the first period gave Victoria a 2-0 lead after one period.
Ryan Wade opened the scoring with a shorthanded goal 1:59 into the first period. Gary Gladue gathered in a loose puck in the Victoria zone, and fed Wade on a 2-on-1 rush into the Fresno zone. Wade skated across the Falcons' blue line, and beat Kris Mayotte from the right-wing circle to give the Salmon Kings a 1-0 lead.
Wes Goldie added a power-play goal at 8:25 to double the lead. Goldie took a pass from Jordan Krestanovich in the left-wing circle and roofed a shot over Mayotte's right shoulder for his 17th goal of the season.
The Falcons cut their deficit to one after 40 minutes of play with a shorthanded goal of their own at the 15:52 mark of the second period. John Morlang moved the puck ahead to Matt Quinn who skated into the right-wing circle of the Salmon Kings' zone, and slid a shot past Billy Thompson on his backhand for his fourth goal of the season.
Fresno scored the game's first even-strength goal 11:36 into the third period to tie the game at 2. Morlang centered the puck in front for Tyler Kindle and he poked the puck between Thompson's legs for his fifth goal of the season.
The Falcons outshot the Salmon Kings 21-7 in the third period, as Thompson kept Fresno off the board after Kindle's goal to send the game to overtime.
In the extra session, Morlang fed Bernard into the Victoria zone, and he beat Thompson with a shot from the left-wing circle for Fresno's second shorthanded goal of the night, and his fifth goal of the year.
