READING, PA - The Florida Everblades (11-9-0) picked up their second straight win, battling from behind to end the Reading Royals' (11-7-0) three-game winning streak with a strong 4-2 victory on Saturday night from the Sovereign Center.
A fast paced first period saw each team find the back of the net once. The Everblades opened the game's scoring after being under heavy pressure by Reading in the first couple minutes. After weathering the storm, the Everblades worked the puck to the left point where Phil Paquet saw his initial shot blocked. Paquet however chased down the loose puck and found Mike McKenzie at the right side of the crease with a perfect pass. McKenzie quickly one-timed the puck past Royals goalie Matt Dalton at 9:43 for the 1-0 lead.
Reading was able to battle back and tie the score at 14:08 with a power play goal. Matt Caruana tallied his ninth goal of the season after picking up a loose puck in the right circle and threading it through Everblades defenseman David Fischer and goaltender Jaroslav Janus.
The Royals then snagged the lead early in the second period when Ben Gordon notched his fifth goal of the year just 2:47 into the frame with a quick wrist shot from the left circle that sailed past the glove of Janus and just inside the right post.
In the third period however the Everblades wasted no time tying the score with a power play goal by Elgin Reid just 31seconds into the frame. Reid's fourth goal of the season came off a shot from the blue line that snuck through traffic and into the net. Mitch Fadden and Paquet picked up the helpers.
With the game tied at two, the Everblades kept the pressure on and eventually took the lead for good at the 12:46 mark when McKenzie tipped a pass from Evgeny Timkin by Dalton from the right side of the crease again. Fischer also picked up an assist on McKenzie's third goal of the year by keeping the play in the offensive zone alive at the right point before finding Timkin with a pass in the right corner.
As the period wound down, the Everblades had to batten down the hatches as Reading came at them in waves, including 1:29 of power play time for Reading in the game's closing minutes. But the Everblades defense held, and Paquet sealed the win with an empty net goal with one second remaining.
In goal Janus picked up the win to improve his record to 5-4-0 after making 17 saves. Dalton took the loss falling to 7-4-0 after allowing three goals on 27 shots.
On the power play, the Everblades finished the night 1-of-4, while Reading closed out the game 1-of-2.
