Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Victoria, BC - In a Friday night match-up the Victoria Salmon Kings and the Idaho Steelheads took the ice at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre for the second game of a three game set. The Salmon Kings started David Shantz, while Mike Zacharias was given the nod by the Steelheads.

The Steelheads scored the game's opening goal at the 3:32 mark when Kael Mouillierat backhanded a shot from the slot through the legs of Shantz. The marker was Mouillierat's ninth of the season. A power play goal by Mark Derlago at the 12:44 mark doubled Idaho's lead as he lifted a shot from in front of the net over the Salmon Kings' netminder for his ninth of the campaign. Victoria got on the board 18:54 into the first period when Geoff Waugh's point shot found its way through traffic in front of the net for his first goal as a Salmon King. Idaho led 2-1 going into the first intermission.

The middle frame began with the clubs lighting the lamp three times in the first two minutes. The Steelheads netted goals at the 1:29 and 1:39 marks as Tristan King scored his first and Marty Flichel registered his eighth goal of the season. Victoria would respond when P.J. Atherton collected his fourth tally of the year 17 seconds later as he backhanded a Derick Martin rebound past Zacharias. The Salmon Kings made it a one-goal game during a man advantage at 16:45 when Matt Siddall tipped in Atherton's shot from the blue line. The tally was Siddall's sixth of the season as the Steelheads held a 4-3 advantage after forty minutes.

Idaho restored their two-goal lead at the 5:44 mark when Flichel notched his second goal of the game as he snapped a shot past the glove of Shantz. Atherton netted his second of the match at 13:16 when he skated in from the left wing and pulled a forehand-to-backhand move to put the puck over the shoulder of Zacharias. The Steelheads secured their victory with 2:20 remaining in the final frame off an odd-man rush as Adam Huxley collected his second goal of the campaign to round out the scoring. Steelheads 6 Salmon Kings 4.

Game-time is 7:05p.m. During tomorrow's contest Victoria will be celebrating Marty the Marmot's fifth birthday. The first 500 kids through the gates will receive a special goodie bag.
