Buffalo Bisons News Release

Buffalo Bisons pitcher Jason Stanford has set a new team Modern Era record for strikeouts this afternoon. The hurler struck out for Rochester Red Wings at Frontier Field to move past Buffalo Baseball Hall of Famer Rick Reed.

Stanford now has 293 strikeouts in his seven-year Bisons' career, three more than the previous high of 290 set by Reed (1988-1991). Stanford is also the only person in the Modern Era (1985-on) to play for the Bisons in seven seasons.

Stanford entered the final day of the regular season one behind Reed with 289 strikeouts. Pitching on just two days rest, the southpaw struck out Rochester's Jose Morales for the first out of the second inning. Then after allowing a run in the bottom of the fourth, Stanford fanned Matt Macri on three pitches for the record-breaking strikeout. Stanford then struck out the next to batters to close out his outing with four punch outs.

In 72 games over seven seasons with the Bisons, Stanford is 25-12 with a 3.54ERA. His 381.0 innings pitched are 3rd most in the Modern Era while his 25 wins rank 5th.

Stanford was originally signed by the Cleveland Indians as a free agent on November 16, 1999. He made his first appearance with Buffalo in a spot start on September 1, 2001 and threw a complete-game shutout with 10 strikeouts. After going 3-1 with a 2.78ERA in six games in 2002, he was the Bisons Pitcher of the Year in 2003. That season, he went 10-4 with a 3.43ERA and 108 strikeouts in 20 starts.

Stanford was injured for most of the 2004 and 2005 seasons, but did make brief appearances with Buffalo. Last season, Stanford was 6-6 with a 4.01ERA in 22 starts with the team. This year, Stanford is 5-1 with a 4.11ERA in 18 games. He spent two months of this season with the Cleveland Indians.
