Buffalo Bisons News Release
***The Bisons were officially eliminated from 2007 playoff contention with last night's 3-0 loss to Rochester***
TODAY'S GAME: This afternoon, the Buffalo Bisons will conclude their 2007 season as they take on the Rochester Red Wings in the fourth game of a four-game set from Frontier Field (1:35 p.m.). The Herd was eliminated from playoff contention last night as it fell to Rochester, 3-0. Buffalo can win the series, however, as they won the first two games of the set. On the mound this afternoon will be LHP Jason Stanford. The southpaw was the victorious pitcher on Friday night against the Wings as he allowed just three runs (two earned) in five innings of work. Rochester will counter with LHP Dave Gassner.
2ND UP FOR GRABS: The winner of today's game will claim second place in the International League North division. Buffalo and Rochester are in a virtual tie with the Bisons percentage points ahead of the Red Wings.
WINNING SEASON: There will be no playoffs for the Bisons this year, but the team has put together another winning season. At 75-66 the team has a .532 winning percentage. It's the 8th consecutive season the Herd has posted a winning record and the 13th straight year with a .500 or better record (1999, 72-72). Buffalo has not finished worse than 3rd in the division since 1999.
IN THE CLUBHOUSE: Ben Francisco has to hold on to his league-high average for only one more day. The outfielder hit .318 in 95 games with Buffalo this year, but was promoted to Cleveland on Saturday. There are three other players within reach today: Richmond's Martin Prado (.314), Columbus' Brandon Watson (.313) and Columbus' Brandon Watson (.313). Francisco would be the Bisons first batting championship since 1990 (Mark Ryal, .334, American Association).
K QUEST: LHP Jason Stanford is hoping to make Bisons' history this afternoon. The southpaw has 289 strikeouts in his seven-year Bisons career, the 2nd-most in the Modern Era. Stanny trails only Buffalo Baseball Hall of Famer Rick Reed (290) in his quest to be the team's strikeout king. In 71 games with the Herd, Stanford is 25-12 with a 3.49ERA. He ranks 5th in wins and 3rd in innings pitched (377.0). He's the only person to play for the team in seven seasons in the Modern Era.
HIT STREAK: Andy Marte comes into today's game with a 12-game hit streak -the longest active streak on the team. Since August 21, he has hit .405 (17-42) with four doubles, three home runs and 11RBI. He has also scored nine runs in the 12-game stretch. Since the beginning of August, Marte has hit .310 (36-116) with six doubles, five home runs and 17RBI.
LAST DAY MILESTONES: Here are some Bisons individual marks to aim for today. Jason Cooper is one shy of 10 homers and 10 stolen bases and Andy Marte is one RBI from reaching 60. Joe Inglett has nine triples, one away from the league lead.
