Votto Named Louisville MVP
September 3, 2007 - International League (IL1)
Louisville Bats News Release
Louisville, KY - Louisville infielder/outfielder Joey Votto was today named the recipient of the Mary E. Barney Louisville Bats Most Valuable Player Award for 2007.
Votto is among the league leaders in batting average (.295 -11th), home runs (22 - 4th), RBI (92 - 2nd), hits (146-5th), and on-base percentage (.382 - 5th).
The 23-year-old Votto was selected as the International League's Rookie-of-the-Year and was named to the International League's post-season All-Star team as the first baseman.
In May, Votto earned Louisville Hitter-of-the-Month honors after posting a .402 batting average with six home runs and 21 RBI. He also became the second player in franchise history to have a multi-home run game in consecutive days on August 17 and 18.
A native of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Votto reached base in 42 consecutive games earlier this year, the second longest streak in the IL this season. He was named to the World Team for the 2007 All-Star Futures Game at AT&T Park in San Francisco and selected to the IL team for the Triple-A All-Star Game in Albuquerque.
Originally drafted in the second round of the 2002 draft by Cincinnati, Votto was named the Southern League's Most Valuable Player and the Reds organization's minor league Hitter of the Year in 2006.
Votto follows current Reds outfielder Norris Hopper who was the first recipient of the award in 2006.
The Mary E. Barney Most Valuable Player Award is named after long time Louisville front office employee Mary Barney, who retired after 25 years in baseball following the 2006 season. Barney worked for the Louisville franchise since its inception in 1982 and spent her last 20 years in as Director of Baseball Operations.
