Bisons Shutout Mets 3-0, Expanding Win Streak to Nine Games

September 7, 2021 - International League (IL)
Buffalo Bisons News Release

Shutting out their opponent for the third time in the past eight games, the Bisons beat the Syracuse Mets, 3-0, Tuesday night in the first game of a six-game series at Sahlen Field. The win drops the Herd's magic number to clinch the Northeast Division to eight, and coupled with a Durham loss to Norfolk, pulls Buffalo to within two games of the Bulls for the best record in Triple-A East.

The win was Buffalo's ninth straight, just one shy of the team's modern era record set in the 2002 and 2004 seasons.

Five Buffalo pitchers scattered seven Syracuse hits, with winning pitcher Bowden Francis carrying the load with five innings of shutout relief.

Following a spot start from rehabbing Blue Jays starter Ross Stripling, Francis took over on the bump in the top of the 3rd and was magnificent for the club. The right-hander , allowed just two hits and three total base runners while striking out three.

Francis retired the first seven batters he faced. In the top of the fifth inning when Syracuse got a runner in scoring position on a Travis Blankenhorn one-out double, Francis struck out both David Thompson and Martin Cervenka to end the threat.

A.J. Cole and Jacob Waguespack closed out the win as both pitchers allowed two hits but no runs in the eighth and ninth innings respectively.

Limited by a pitch count, Stripling worked just 1.1 innings to start the game, throwing 18 of his 33 pitches for strikes. He started his outing with a strikeout of Mark Payton and allowed a hit and a walk while recording four outs.

After six and a half innings of scoreless baseball, the Bisons got on the board, breaking the scoreless tie in the bottom of the 7th. Christian Colon led off the inning with an infield hit up the middle, which struck Mets starter Vance Worley in the back and forced the veteran to leave the game. Cullen Large and Kellin Delgan struck out, but just when it seemed that Syracuse was going to escape the inning, Logan Warmoth singled to centerfield, allowing Colon to reach third base. Colon then scored from third base on a wild pitch, and the Syracuse mistake was all the Bisons needed to take the lead.

The Bisons added two insurance runs to their lead in the bottom of the eight. With Tyler White on first base, Gregory Polanco homered to right-centerfield for his first blast at Sahlen Field as a member of the Herd.

The Bisons (65-41) and Mets (42-64) will continue the series at Sahlen Field on Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 pm. Zach Logue is expected to start on the mound for Buffalo.
