Buffalo Bisons News Release
BUFFALO, NY - Opening up a six-game set against the Worcester Red Sox on Tuesday night, the Buffalo Bisons lost a close one 2-1 at Sahlen Field to snap a three-game win streak.
Casey Lawrence made the start and was excellent once again, going 5.2 innings allowing one run on three hits with zero walks and six strikeouts. The lone run came in the sixth when Devlin Granberg doubled before advancing to third, and eventually home, on a pair of sac flies.
The Bisons would tie things up in their half of the sixth when Jordan Groshans singled home Gabriel Moreno, and despite still having two on and no outs, a heads-up play by WooSox second baseman Nick Sogard ended the threat when Sogard allowed a soft liner to drop in order to turn a 4-6-5 double play and get the two lead runners.
After Eric Yardley got the final out of the sixth, Vinny Nittoli entered in the seventh to make his Bison debut and promptly struck out the side in order. Nittoli spent the first half of the season with Triple-A Scranton, pitching to a 3.44 ERA in 36.2 innings with 44 strikeouts on the year, though his numbers since the start of May are far superior: a 1.61 ERA in 28 innings.
Graham Spraker had a 1-2-3 eighth, but a one-out walk by Kyle Johnston in the ninth came around to score the go-ahead run on an RBI fielder's choice by Ryan Fitzgerald.
Chavez Young led off the bottom of the ninth with a walk, but a failed hit-and-run with Cullen Large turned into a line-drive double play which erased the tying run. Zack Kelly then got Logan Warmoth to strike out to end the ballgame and secure the Worcester win.
The Bisons and WooSox will continue their series tomorrow night, with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. EST.
