July 26, 2022 - International League (IL)
Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
PAPILLION, Neb. - The Omaha Storm Chasers (47-46) gave manager Scott Thorman his 400th win as a minor league manager with a 5-1 series opening win over the Syracuse Mets (42-52). This series is the first time the two teams have played in over 30 years.
Designated hitter Salvador Perez hit a double in the first, his first game in a rehab appearance with the Omaha Storm Chasers. Perez, playing in just his 30th career Triple-A game, would end up stranded to end the inning, leaving the scoreboard still.
The Storm Chasers ended a 20-inning scoreless streak in the third inning, getting a homer from first baseman Angelo Castellano to lead off the inning. Perez got another hit in the third before second baseman Michael Massey hit a double to put runners at second and third with only one out in the inning.
Right fielder Nate Eaton put up another run with an infield single before third baseman Clay Dungan hit a line drive into left field to score Massey from second. In all, Omaha scored three runs in the frame, taking an early 3-0 lead.
A couple hits in the bottom of the frame put a tally on the board for the S-Mets, cutting Omaha's lead to 3-1.
Left-hander Daniel Lynch began his second rehab stint with the Chasers, getting the start and going 4.0 innings while allowing one run with six strikeouts.
Perez got his third hit in his fourth plate appearance in the seventh, but he would again end up stranded to leave the lead at two.
Left-hander Drew Parrish (win, 2-4), normally a starter, came in after Lynch and pitched two scoreless innings.
Omaha put more tallies on the board in the eighth. Left fielder Brewer Hicklen was hit by a pitch to start the inning before scoring on a double from Dungan. After moving to third on a ground out, Dungan would come in to score on a sacrifice fly from catcher Freddy Fermin and push the score to 5-1 heading into the ninth.
Right-hander Ándres Núñez tossed the ninth inning, extending his streak of games without allowing an earned run to 22 games, the longest such streak in the International League, to secure the 5-1 win.
The Storm Chasers and S-Mets play game two on Wednesday, with first pitch scheduled for 11:05 a.m. CDT. Coverage is set to begin at 10:45 a.m. on the Sarpy County Tourism Pregame Show on 1180 The Zone. Omaha looks to send right-hander Carlos Hernández out to start tomorrow while Syracuse will start with right-hander Jacob deGrom, who looks to make his second MLB rehab start.
