Buffalo Bisons News Release
BUFFALO, NY - Returning home for the Fourth of July, the Buffalo Bisons fell to the Syracuse Mets 4-3 in the opener of this seven-game set on Monday night from Sahlen Field.
Aside from the Independence Day festivities, all eyes were on the catchers for both sides: Danny Jansen made his first rehab appearance with the Bisons, while Francisco Álvarez, the No. 6 prospect in all of baseball, made his Triple-A debut for the Mets.
Jansen batted cleanup and caught six innings before being lifted for Stevie Berman, going 1-2 at the dish with a single and a walk as he works his way back from a left pinky fracture suffered on June 7.
The Bisons also welcomed another Blue Jay on a rehab assignment, as right-handed reliever Yimi Garcia pitched a 1-2-3 inning of work with a pair of strikeouts on just eight pitches. Garcia pitched in relief of Derek Holland, who started and gave up two runs over two innings off a two-run homer by Gosuke Katoh.
Katoh, who was briefly a Blue Jay and Bison at the start of this season, would score three runs while reaching base three times off two extra-base hits to lead the Mets offence.
The Bisons' runs were scored way back in the second off of back-to-back doubles by Nathan Lukes and Otto López, the latter of whom extended his hitting streak to 10.
Kyle Johnston and Anthony Kay each gave up a run over their respective two innings of work, while Tayler Saucedo and Jeremy Beasley each pitched scoreless innings in the eighth and ninth to keep the deficit to two.
The Bisons did have runners on the corners in the bottom of the ninth with one away and the winning run at the plate, and while Lukes would drive in Chavez Young from third to make it 4-3, but the comeback would fall just short as the next two batters went down in order.
The Bisons and Mets will enjoy an off day tomorrow before resuming this series with a doubleheader on Wednesday. The first game is set for 6:00 p.m. EST., with game two set to begin roughly 30 minutes following the conclusion of game one.
