Indianapolis Indians News Release

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Indians were handed their sixth series loss and dropped to a season-low two games below .500 last night, 7-4. After a two-RBI double by Yoshi Tsutsugo in the first to give Indy an early 2-0 lead, the Sounds were quick to respond with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame and poured onto their lead with a four-spot in the third to break the game open. The Indians showed signs of life with a pair of runs - highlighted by an RBI single by Cal Mitchell - in the fifth to cut the deficit to three runs. Indy had at least one hit in eight of its nine offensive half innings but could not find timely hitting and were held scoreless in the final four frames. Ji-Hwan Bae and Mitchell each deposited three-hit performances, and Tsutsugo plated three of the Indians four runs.

BOUNCE BACK TIME: With last night's loss at Nashville, the Indians dropped to two games below .500 for the first time this season. Previously, they were a perfect 8-0 in games where they were one game below .500 to jump back up to the even mark.

HE'S GOT SWAG: With an 0-for-5 showing last night, Travis Swaggerty had his 21-game on-base streak snapped. From 5/27-7/2, Swaggerty hit safely in 18 of 21 games with a .325 average (27-for-83), 10 extra-base hits and 19 RBI. Since 5/27, he has reached base safely in 29 of 31 games with hits in 25 contests during that span with a .328 average (40-for-122), 13 extra-base hits (five doubles, three triples, five home runs) and 25 RBI.

CONSISTENCY IS KEY: Cal Mitchell and Kevin Newman are each working 10-game hitting streaks with the Indians, the team's longest this season and the third-longest active streaks in the International League. More on their individual streaks are listed below:

Mitchell, 5/17-7/3: After spending the last month in the big leagues, Mitchell returned to the Indians lineup and picked up where he left off to extend his Triple-A hitting streak to 10 games with a team-high tying hree hits last night at Nashville. Since the beginning of his streak on 5/17, he is hitting .410 (16-for-39) with a .913 OPS. In 38 games with Indianapolis this season, Mitchell has hit .326 (46-for-141) with a .511 slugging percentage and .885 OPS.

Newman, 5/19 (1)-7/2: With a season-high three hits in his last two games at Nashville, Newman has now hit safely in 10 consecutive games and 10-of-11 games with the Indians this season across both of his rehab assignments. Since the second game of his first rehab stint on 5/19 (1), he owns a .405 average (15-for-37), 12 hits of which have been singles.

TONIGHT: In Victory Field's Fourth of July celebration, the Indians will look to open the homestand on a high note with their first Fourth of July win since 2018. The last time the two teams faced each other on July 4 was 1988 in Des Moines, with the Indians losing to the Iowa Cubs, 10-6. Today begins the second series between the two teams this season and the first at Victory Field after Indy took four of six games at Principal Park earlier this year. For the Indians today, Osvaldo Bido will make his third career start against the I-Cubs. In his first two starts against Iowa this season on 4/26 and 5/1, he fanned seven over 7.1 one-hit innings and did not allow an earned run. Countering for Iowa is Javier Assad in his Triple-A debut.

THE TRADITION CONTINUES: Tonight, the Indians will play their 24th consecutive Fourth of July game at Victory Field, a tradition only disturbed by a 2009 postponement and the cancellation of the 2020 minor league season since the ballpark opened. The holiday has not been kind to the Indians as of late, and since 2010 they are just 3-8, compared to an 8-4 record in the first 12 years of Victory Field. The home team has dropped six of their last seven Fourth of July contests and have been outscored 42-21 on the holiday since 2014.

WELCOME HOME: The Pirates announced today that Cathedral High School graduate Dillon Peters has had his rehab assignment transferred from Double-A Altoona to Indianapolis. The 29-year-old was placed on the 15-day injured list on June 6 (retroactive to June 3). In 16 games (four starts) with Pittsburgh to begin the season, he went 4-2 with a 3.86 ERA (11er/25.2ip), 21 strikeouts, 1.17 WHIP and .161 average against. He has held left-handed hitters in the majors to a .103 average (3-for-29) this season. After being traded from Los Angeles (AL) to Pittsburgh on July 19, 2021 in exchange for cash, Peters was assigned to Indianapolis and went 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA (2er/12.0ip) and 15 strikeouts in five games (two starts) with his hometown team. In his second start on Aug. 7, 2021 at Iowa, he earned the win with 5.0 hitless innings.

THIS DATE IN 2004: The Indians hosted their largest holiday crowd in Victory Field history when 16,062 fans packed the stadium to witness a come-from-behind, walk-off victory over the Louisville Bats on the Fourth of July. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, Peter Bergeron singled home the game-winning run to send the city into a Fourth of July fireworks show for the ages.
