Louisville Bats News Release
LOUISVILLE, KY - The St. Paul Saints scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning to earn a 4-1 win over the Louisville Bats on Independence Day at Louisville Slugger Field.
Louisville scored the first run of the night in the bottom of the second inning on Colin Moran's solo home run. It was Moran's second home run of the season with the Bats, adding to the four long balls he has hit with Cincinnati.
From there it was Louisville starter Justin Nicolino's show as he shut down the St. Paul hitters, carrying a no-hitter into the bottom of the seventh inning. With two outs in that frame, Caleb Hamilton ended the no-hit bid and shutout with a game-tying solo home run.
Nicolino finished his night allowing just the one run on two hits over seven innings of work before giving way to the Louisville bullpen.
In the top of the eighth inning, St. Paul mounted a unique three-run rally to take the lead. John Andreoli led off with a bloop single before Elliot Soto walked. The two baserunners then attempted a double steal and catcher Chris Okey's throw to third base trickled into left field, allowing Andreoli to score. Two batters later, Bats' pitcher Ricky Karcher threw a fastball to the backstop which allowed Soto to score the second run of the inning. Michael Helman followed with an RBI single, extending the Saints lead to 4-1.
The St. Paul bullpen recorded the final six outs to seal the victory, completing a night in which five different pitchers tossed a scoreless inning in relief of starter Dereck Rodriguez.
After a day off Tuesday, the Bats and Saints will play game two of their six-game series Wednesday night at Louisville Slugger Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. ET.
