Montgomery Biscuits News Release

MONTGOMERY, AL - The Biscuits powered their way to a second straight victory, defeating the Tennessee Smokies, 6-3, on Thursday night at SmokiesPark.

Pitching dominated the early portion of game two as starters Brandon Mann and Andrew Cashner traded scoreless innings through three innings.

Cashner added a scoreless top half of the fourth, and the Smokies finally broke through against Mann in the bottom of the frame. Jonathan Mota opened the inning with a double to left field and a batter later, Marquez Smith brought in the first run of the game with an RBI single to give the Smokies a 1-0 advantage.

The Biscuits took control of the game in the top of the fifth inning when Cashner walked J.T. Hall and Desmond Jennings to put two aboard with two outs. Brandon Chaves rolled a ball to second that was thrown away by second baseman Nate Swanson. Hall scored to tie the game, with Jennings ruled to third and Chaves to second when the throw bounced into the dugout. Cashner was relieved by Casey Lambert and Chris Nowak greeted him with a two-run single to center field that scored both runners and gave the Biscuits a 3-1 lead.

Cashner was charged with all three runs, but all three were unearned due to the error on Samson. Cashner (0-1) took the loss for Tennessee regardless, his first decision of the season.

Lambert ran into trouble again as the Biscuits broke the game open in the sixth inning. Matt Fields walked to start the inning and Nevin Ashley followed with his first home runs as a Biscuit, a two-run drive to left-center field to put the Biscuits out front, 5-1. Later in the inning, Jason Bowers sent a solo-home run to left field to extend the Biscuits lead, 6-1

Mann (5-5) evened his record with a sterling effort over 6 1/3 innings. He allowed just six hits, while striking out four. He departed with two aboard in the seventh, but Rayner Oliveros relieved him and quickly recorded the final two outs.

Oliveros finished the ballgame for the Biscuits, allowing a pair of runs in the ninth inning to cap the scoring, but effectively protecting the lead he was handed.

Game three of the series is scheduled for 6:15 PM on Friday night at SmokiesPark. RHP Heath Rollins (7-7, 3.71) will make the start for Montgomery against RHP Casey Coleman (9-3, 2.56) for Tennessee.
