Mobile BayBears News Release
JACKSON, Tenn. - For the second consecutive contest, the BayBears were unable to get the big base hit when they needed it as they fell to the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx 3-1 on Thursday night at Pringles Park.
Ten men were left on base by the BayBears (46-41, 9-8), all of them in scoring position including two in the top of the ninth as Pedro Ciriaco struck out to end the ballgame against Anthony Varvaro (S, 5).
Varvaro nailed it down for Luis Munoz (3-4) who was strong in five-plus innings of four-hit, shutout ball. Munoz was pulled in the sixth after a lead-off walk to Bryan Byrne. Nick Hill entered and allowed the bags to become full after a walk and a hit batsman with no outs, but the BayBears didn't score as Ricardo Sosa fanned and Matt Tupman bounced into a double play.
West Tenn (40-48, 13-5) broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth against Jarrod Parker (4-4) who fanned five in his five frames. Parker walked Jimmy Mojica with one out in the fifth and then hit Mel Stocker. That set the table for Greg Halman who doubled both men home with a shot to right field.
Parker gave way to Leyson Septimo who made his BayBear debut in the sixth. A passed ball allowed Travis Garcia to reach after a lead-off single. After two more strikeouts, Septimo walked Mojica and hit Stocker with the bases loaded to force in a run. Septimo fanned Halman to retire the side, making for a four-strikeout inning in his Double-A debut.
Anti-climactically, the BayBears picked up a run in the seventh as Chris Rahl walked, took second on a hit by Mark Hallberg, and stole third. He scored on a groundout by Ciriaco. The BayBears were 0-for-12 with runners in scoring position.
The Mobile BayBears have sent nearly 100 players to the major leagues. They battle the Diamond Jaxx in the third of their four-game set on Friday night at 7:05 with Wes Roemer (4-5, 3.58) getting the start. The BayBears return home on Wednesday, July 15 to take on the Birmingham Barons at 7:05 p.m. For Hank Aaron Stadium tickets, call (251) 479-BEAR or log on to www.mobilebaybears.com.
