Stars Blank Chattanooga to End Losing Streak

July 9, 2009 - Southern League (SL1)
Huntsville Stars News Release

Mike Jones spun six scoreless innings and Drew Anderson drove in two runs to push Huntsville past Chattanooga 3-0 Thursday night in the second of a four-game set at AT&T Field. The Stars snapped a season-high six-game skid to improve to 8-10 in the second half and 46-41 overall, while the Lookouts dropped to 8-9 in the second half and 38-48 overall. The Stars earned their fifth shutout win of the season after allowing 45 runs on 58 hits in the previous five games.

Shane Justis tripled with one out in the first inning and scored when Anderson followed with a double, as the Stars scored first for the first time in seven games. Jonathan Lucroy then doubled with one out to drive in Anderson and push Kevin Melillo, who had walked, to third base. The rally stymied when Lucroy was tagged out trying to make his way back to the bag on a ground ball to second base.

Justis led off the third with a walk and scored on a double by Anderson, who drove in his fourth run of the series. Lookouts starter JD Durbin then retired nine of the last ten hitters he encountered and left after five frames, charged with three runs on five hits, while walking two and fanning one. He suffered the loss to fall to 1-3.

Josh Bell led off the Lookouts second inning with a double but never advanced, as Jones struck out the next two hitters and ended the inning with a ground out. He then worked out of a situation where he had runners at first and second base and one out in the third by getting Ramon Nivar to bounce into a force play and Russ Mitchell to ground out. The right-hander retired nine of the last 10 batters he faced, six with a ground out, and finished by inducing a dozen ground ball outs. He struck out four and walked one to earn his second victory of the year with the Stars and sixth overall.

Juan Sandoval took over in the seventh and retired all six batters he faced before giving way to Rob Wooten, who gave up a leadoff double to Nivar before striking out the next two hitters and getting a ground ball out to end the game. Wooten earned his third save in as many chances.

The series continues Friday with right-hander Donovan Hand taking the mound for the Stars against Lookouts' right-hander Jesus Castillo. Coverage of the game begins at 6:00 pm central time and can be heard through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.
