MONTGOMERY - Jake McGee turned in a star performance starting Monday night's 2-1 win for the Montgomery Biscuits over the Birmingham Barons at Riverwalk Stadium and Steve Andrade turned in another star performance finishing it.

McGee pitched 6 1/3 innings of shutout ball and did not allow a Barons runner past second base, notching his third win of the season. Andrade entered in the eighth inning with the tying runs on base and none out and worked hard for a difficult, two-inning save.

McGee allowed three hits and three walks in his start, striking out three and finishing his third quality start of the season. Jino Gonzalez finished the seventh inning for him but ran into some trouble in the eighth, when Stefan Gartrell walked and Jared Price sent a base hit into center field that Rashad Eldridge misplayed, leaving runners at second and third. Andrade struck out two and only allowed one of the runners to score, preserving the lead.

There was more drama for Andrade in the ninth. After he fanned Javier Castillo and Micah Schnurstein, Stefan Gartrell reached on a fielding error by thrid baseman Chris Nowak. Gartrell then stole second base and took third when John Jaso's throw sailed into center field. But Andrade earned his first save of the year by inducing a groundball from Joe Persichina.

Rhyne Hughes hit a solo homer in the fifth in his first start since suffering a concussion on April 9. Montgomery's other run came in the first, when Ronnie Merrill doubled and scored on a shattered-bat blooper by Nowak that second baseman Robert Hudson misplayed into a single.

The Biscuits made a bigger logjam of the South Division with the win, climbing to within four games of the division-leading Barons, despite being seven games below .500.

The teams meet Tuesday morning for game two, with Wade Davis opposing Kyle McCulloch at 10:35.
