HOOVER, Ala. - The Southern League announced Monday that Barons pitcher Justin Cassel has been named its pitcher of the week for the period ending May 4. Cassel becomes the first Baron recognized by the league office for his on-field accomplishments this year.

Cassel (2-1) dominated Mobile on Friday en route to earning his second victory of the season. Over seven shutout innings, he allowed just five hits and a walk, while striking out a career-best nine batters. That is the highest strikeout total recorded by a Barons pitcher in a game this year.

It was the second straight shutout appearance by Cassel, who hasn't allowed a run in his last 13 innings (two starts). He has surrendered just two unearned runs over his last 23.2 innings, and his 1.38 ERA ranks sixth in the Southern League.

Originally from Northridge, Calif., Cassel was drafted by the White Sox in the 7th Round of the 2006 draft out of UC-Irvine. He has helped anchor a pitching staff that entered Monday's action ranked second in the league in earned run average (3.12) and first in shutouts, hits, and home runs allowed. The staff ranks second in walks allowed and fourth in strikeouts.

The Barons are set to begin a five-game series at Montgomery this evening at 7:05 pm. Cassel is scheduled to start Wednesday night's game against Biscuits lefthander James Houser.
