HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - A baserunning blunder by Frank Curreri in the ninth inning staved off the BayBears' comeback hopes in an 8-6 loss to the Huntsville Stars at Joe W. Davis Stadium.

Trailing 8-4 entering the ninth, the BayBears (15-16) scored on an RBI double by Rusty Ryal to pull within 8-5. With the bases full and one out, Brandon Burgess grounded into a fielder's choice to score Ryal, cutting the lead to 8-6, but Curreri rounded third base too far and was tagged out by Mat Gamel to end the game.

Brooks Brown (2-4) started for the BayBears and allowed five runs on nine hits over 5.2 innings. It was 3-1 Huntsville (21-10) when Brown left the game, but the two runners that Vince Bongiovanni inherited ending up scoring on a single by Angel Salome to make it 5-1. The Stars went ahead 7-1 on a two-run double by Michael Brantley.

In the seventh, the BayBears began drawing closer on a two-out, RBI double by Bryan Byrne and a two-run double by Ryal, who also homered in the ballgame. Steve Hammond (4-1) worked the first six frames for the Stars and allowed just a run on six hits while fanning six.

Tony Barnette (2-3, 5.40) starts for the BayBears on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. in the second game of the five-game series with the Stars. The BayBears are back in Mobile on Saturday night, May 10, when they host the Jacksonville Suns at Hank Aaron Stadium. Call (251) 479-BEAR for tickets or log on to www.mobilebaybears.com.

BEAR CLAWS

BayBears pitching allowed a season-high 16 hits, but they kept reining Southern League Hitter of the Week Matt LaPorta in check as he went 1-for-4. Ryal had his second consecutive three-hit game, multi-RBI game as he had three hits and two RBI on Sunday in Birmingham. Cyle Hankerd had four hits in the ballgame and became the first BayBear to get four hits in a game since August 6, 2007, when Carlos Gonzalez turned the trick.
