Birmingham Barons News Release

Montgomery, Ala. -- The Birmingham Barons managed just five hits off three Montgomery pitchers and fell, 2-1, at Riverwalk Stadium Monday night. Despite the loss, Birmingham (16-15) will maintain at least a share of first place in the South Division standings.

Montgomery (12-19) grabbed the lead early, using a double and a bloop single to gain a 1-0 edge in the first frame. They would add to the lead in the fifth with a solo home run by Rhyne Hughes. Barons starter Clayton Richard (2-5) pitched well in a losing cause, scattering seven hits over seven innings, walking none and striking out a pair.

The Barons managed just three hits off Biscuits starter Jake McGee (3-2) who logged his first shutout appearance of the year. McGee walked three and struck out three on his way to the win. Birmingham's only offense came in the eighth inning when a leadoff walk and a single (and subsequent error) put two runners in scoring position with none out. After a strikeout, Robert Valido brought in a run with an infield single, one of his two hits in the game, and cut the deficit to 2-1. A two-out walk put runners at the corners, but a groundout ended the inning and the scoring threat.

Birmingham threatened again in the ninth. Stefan Gartrell reached on a two-out error, stole second and moved to third on another error, but was stranded when a groundout ended the contest.

Birmingham and Montgomery will turn around quickly and play again Tuesday morning at 10:35 am. Birmingham's Kyle McCulloch (1-4) will oppose Biscuits starter Wade Davis (3-2).
