Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, MD - The Delmarva Shorebirds eight game winning streak ended as they fell 3-2 in ten innings to the Carolina Mudcats on Thursday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
The game was scoreless through the first five innings with both starters dominating to begin the evening.
Carolina finally broke the ice in the sixth without the benefit of a hit. Darrien Miller worked a walk to open the frame and Arbert Cipion was then hit by a pitch to put two aboard. Gabe Holt then grounded into a fielder's choice, putting men at the corners. A wild pitch pushed Holt to second and Joe Gray Jr. then bounced into another fielder's choice at second, scoring Miller to give Carolina a 1-0 lead.
Delmarva tied the game in the seventh when Cristopher Cespedes lined a solo homer out to right, his second of the year, knotting the game at 1-1.
In the ninth, Cespedes doubled to open the inning and advanced to third on a wild pitch, putting the winning run 90 feet away. After a walk and strikeout, Darell Hernaiz grounded back to the mound where the pitcher Evan Reifert fielded and threw to the plate to nail Cespedes and keep the game tied at 1-1. Reifert then got Mason Janvrin to ground out to third to send the game to extras.
With one away in the tenth, Darrien Miller pounded a single off the right field wall to score the placed runner Feliz Valerio from second and give Carolina a 2-1 lead. Pinch running for Miller, Andre Nnebe proceeded to steal second, advance to third when the throw went into center, and then subsequently score on the play when the throw from center to third was sailed out of play to put Carolina up 3-1.
The Shorebirds got one back in the bottom of the tenth with Gunnar Henderson driving in placed runner Janvrin for a groundout, but Carolina held on to claim a 3-2 win.
Refiert (2-0) secured the win for Carolina. Reifert went two scoreless innings, allowing two hits and three walks while striking out four.
Xavier Moore (1-2) takes the tough luck loss for Delmarva. Moore pitched four innings and allowed two unearned runs on three hits while racking up five strikeouts.
Mike Baumann started for Delmarva in a rehab outing and was stellar. Despite not factoring into the decision, Baumaunn fired three perfect frames, striking out four.
Justin Bullock started for Carolina and matched Baumann zero for zero. Bullock also did not register in the decision, but went four scoreless innings, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out four.
In a game without much offense, Cespedes starred for Delmarva, going 2-for-4 with a solo homer and double. Jordan Westburg also collected two hits (2-for-3) for the sixth consecutive game.
Carolina had only four hits, with two of them coming from Holt (2-for-5).
The Shorebirds look to rebound against the Mudcats as the two squads face off again on Friday, May 20 at Perdue Stadium Zach Peek (1-0, 5.63) toes the rubber for Delmarva against Brandon Knarr (0-0, 3.00) for Carolina. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. with pregame coverage on Fox Sports 960 AM and MiLB.TV beginning at 6:50 with Sam Jellinek on the call.
