'Birds Walk-Off Again With Four-Run Ninth

Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
A dramatic four run ninth inning capped Delmarva's biggest comeback of the year, giving the Shorebirds a 7-6 walk-off victory, their second walk-off in the last three days at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. Matt Angle's line drive over the head of Hagerstown right fielder Michael Burgess brought home the winning run from second base and the celebration began.
Trailing 6-3 heading to the last of the ninth, the Birds needed base runners. Three batters later, after two singles by Joe Mahoney and Tyler Henson and a Matt Tucker walk, the bases were juiced and Hagerstown closer Clint Everts was in hot water. The next Shorebirds batter, Kieron Pope, hit a chopper to third base. Steven Souza attempted to gun the runner down at the plate, but the throw pulled the catcher off the dish and Mahoney was safe, making the score 6-4. After a Wally Crancer pop-up, the 'Birds tied it up on Pedro Florimon's 2-run single to center. And a batter later, Angle's third hit of the night drove in Pope, giving Delmarva their fifth win of the season and pulling them back to .500.
The Shorebirds received another sensational effort from their starter, as Cole McCurry allowed just a run on two hits in five innings, and the 'Birds led 3-1 when their southpaw departed. But the Suns battled back with five runs over the next three innings against the Delmarva bullpen, including an Aaron Suess three-run homer in the sixth off of Joe Esposito that put Hagerstown on top.
Things looked bleak for the Shorebirds as they were shut down for most of the late innings, with Hagerstown reliever Kyle Gunderson spinning three perfect frames in the sixth, seventh, and eighth. But Delmarva was able to tee off on Everts in the bottom of the last, earning the victory for Brian Parker. Parker allowed one run on two hits in two innings and became the beneficiary of the offensive heroics by picking up his third win of the young season, all out of the bullpen.
The Shorebirds and Suns continue their series with a doubleheader on Tuesday night, beginning at 6:05pm.
