Asheville Tourists News Release
GREENSBORO, NC - The Greensboro Grasshoppers took advantage of a solid bullpen effort, clutch defense and pitching, and the first runs of the year against Jhoulys Chacin en route to a 3-2 win Monday afternoon against the Asheville Tourists.
Greensboro got on the board in the bottom of the first when Chacin (1-1) yielded a two-out, bases loaded walk to Ben Lasater. It was the first run of the year given up by Chacin. Greensboro got their other two runs via a third inning sacrifice fly from Lasater and Michael Stanton's fifth inning solo home run.
Asheville struck back in the sixth against âHoppers starter Christhian Martinez (1-0). Three straight singles from Beau Seabury, Michael Mitchell and Everth Cabrera loaded the bases for Helder Velasquez. Unfortunately for the Tourists, Velasquez grounded into a double play and although Seabury scored from third on the play, the rally was effectively killed one hitter later when Martinez got Darin Holcomb to fly out to right field for the third out.
The Tourists went 1-2-3 in the seventh and eighth innings off Greensboro relievers, then mounted a rally in the ninth when Helder Velasquez led off the inning with a single. The Greensboro defense stepped up once again and picked up the double play on the next hitter when Brian Rike struck out and Velasquez was thrown out trying to steal second. Holcomb struck out to end the rally, the game and the series between the Grasshoppers and Tourists.
The Tourists return home tomorrow night to take on the West Virginia Power. Cory Riordan (1-1) takes the ball for the Tourists while the Power will counter with Evan Anundsen. For Tuesday night's game, every seat at McCormick Field is available for just $5, including all premium seating options, while supplies last. The game will be broadcast on WRES 100.7 FM and on the team's official website.
