Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
SAVANNAH, Ga. - Columbus scored three runs in sixth off Gnats' reliever Julio Polanco and Omar Luna went 4-4 with 3 RBI as the Catfish earned a 7-4 see-saw win at Historic Grayson Stadium on Monday night.
The Gnats had a chance to tie it in the ninth after Jordan Abruzzo and Darren Clark singled to begin the inning. The Gnats would draw no closer as Travis Risser retired the next three batters with Richard Lucas striking out looking to end the game.
Polanco (0-1) entered in the sixth and promptly allowed a double to Gregory Sexton.
Following a groundout, Mike McCormick brought Sexton home with a sacrifice fly. After Stephen Vogt walked, Henry Wrigley doubled him home. Omar Luna then capped the three-run rally with a single to right to make it 4-1 Catfish.
Richard Lucas answered with his first homer of the season on the first pitch of the bottom half from new reliever Justin Garcia.
From there, it turned into a see-saw affair with the Gnats scoring in the seventh on a Daniel Stegall triple that scored Abruzzo. The Catfish countered with four hits and two runs in the eighth to make it 6-3.
Michael Antonini and Alex Cobb matched each other, each going 5.0 innings to leave the score 1-1 as the game forged to the sixth. Antonini allowed 1 run on 4 hits in 5.0 innings for Savannah. He issued 3 walks and struck out 3. Cobb sported a nearly identical line, surrendering 1 run on 4 hits in 5.0 innings while walking 4 and striking out 3.
After an off-day the Gnats return to Grayson Stadium to face the Charleston RiverDogs at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. RHP Scott Moviel (1-1, 8.53) will start for Savannah, facing Charleston RHP Noel Castillo (2-0, 0.93). Thursday night is the first Thirsty Thursday of 2008, presented by Wild Wing Café, Rock 106.1 and Connect Savannah. For tickets and more information call 912.351.9150 or visit www.sandgnats.com.
