Hagerstown Suns News Release
SALISBURY, MD - The Hagerstown Suns (5-5) lost 7-6 to the Delmarva Shorebirds (5-5) on Monday, after surrendering four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning. Clint Everts (0-2) took the loss in relief for the Suns, after allowing all four runs in the ninth to the Shorebirds, while only retiring one batter. Only three of the runs were earned, as third baseman Steven Souza committed his first error of the season, allowing one run to score.
Brian Parker (3-0) collected the victory for the Shorebirds. Parker pitched two innings and allowed one run. The Suns took the first lead of the game on a solo home run by DH Trevor Lawhorn in the second inning. It was Lawhorn's first home run of the season. The Shorebirds answered in the bottom of the second, as the first through third hitters for Delmarva collected two-out base hits, scoring two runs to take the lead.
After Delmarva added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Suns struck for three of their own in the top of the sixth inning. Jake Smolinski and Bill Rhinehart singled on back-to-back pitches before left fielder Aaron Seuss hit his first home run of the season, giving the Suns a 4-3 lead. The Suns added single runs in the eighth and ninth innings before succumbing in the ninth.
Everts allowed two singles and a walk to start the bottom half of the ninth inning and load the bases. Souza picked up an error on a throw to the plate after a ground ball was hit to him, allowing the first run of the inning to score. After a pop-out in foul ground provided the first out of the inning for the Suns, a single by light-hitting shortstop Pedro Florimon and a double over the head of Michael Burgess ended the game for Hagerstown.
Starting pitcher Brad Peacock pitched five innings, allowed three runs and struck out three batters. He was relieved by Kyle Gunderson who faced the minimum nine batters through three innings. Gunderson struck out four while not allowing a base runner. Due to a rain out during the opening series between the Suns and the Shorebirds in Salisbury, the teams will play a double header on Tuesday, April 15th. First pitch for the first game is slated for 6:05 P.M., and both games are scheduled to last seven innings.
The Hagerstown Suns play at Municipal Stadium in Hagerstown, MD and are a Class "A" affiliate of the Washington Nationals.
