Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Lexington, KY - The GreenJackets (7-5) won their fourth straight game by completing the four game sweep over the Legends (2-10) Monday night with a 2-1 win. Starter Craig Clark matched a career high with eight strikeouts in the win and Augusta finished the road trip with a 6-2 record.
Clark (1-0) allowed just one run on one hit while walking one in his first start of the season.
Augusta broke a 1-1 tie in the third inning on an RBI single from Brock Bond scoring Nick Noonan from third base for a 2-1 lead.
The Legends opened the scoring in the first inning when Matt Cusick led off the half inning with a solo home run, his first of the year, for a 1-0 Lexington lead.
That's all Lexington would get though off of Clark who allowed just one walk in the second inning then set the next 11 batters down in a row he faced.
Augusta tied the game at 1-1 in the second inning on a two-out RBI infield single from James Simmons with the bases loaded.
The GreenJackets bullpen worked four shutout innings with Daryl Maday pitching two and allowing three hits, one walk and two strikeouts. Dan Turpen picked up his first save of the year pitching the final two innings of the game.
Turpen allowed one hit, a walk and worked out of bases loaded jam in the ninth to preserve the win.
With the bases loaded and one out Eric Taylor hit a ground ball to second where Bond was able to turn two to end the game by stepping on second then throwing over to first, Augusta's only double-play of the game.
The GreenJackets open a seven game home stand Tuesday night beginning with four games against the Kannapolis Intimidators. Augusta will send right-hander Orlando Yntema (0-0, 9.82) to the hill with Kannapolis countering with right-hander Anthony Carter (2-0, 2.25). First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
Game Notes:
The Augusta bullpen allowed just one run on 13 hits over 17.2 innings pitched during the series. They also struck out 20 while walking just three. The one run that scored was on a solo home run allowed by Daryl Maday on April 12.
Nick Noonan extended his hit streak to nine games with a base hit in the third inning.
Augusta pitching set a season high strikeout total with 13.
