Birds Stumble in Series Opener

Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (15-18) gave up the final six runs in an 8-4 to the Sioux City Explorers (17-16) in front of 3,101 on Friday night at Sioux Falls Stadium.

The Canaries took the lead in the bottom of the third inning. Joe Anthonsen walked and advanced to second base on a throwing error by Sioux City starting pitcher Michael Campbell. Tim Hutting then added the Canaries first hit of the game, a single to advance Anthonsen to third. With runners on the corners, Cory Harris hit his sixth home run of the season to give the Canaries a 3-0 lead.

Sioux City chipped away with runs in the fourth and fifth. Nick McCoola doubled and scored on a Justin Nelson single in the fourth inning. One inning later, Walter Young hit his fifth home run of the season to bring the Explorers within a run, 3-2.

The Birds added to their lead with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. With two outs, Jared Lemieux doubled to left field to score Patrick Reilly and put the Canaries up by a pair of runs, 4-2.

The Explorers score the final six runs in the game. In the top of the sixth inning, Anthony Webster tripled and scored on a single by Justin Nelson. After Lou Palmisano walked, Landon Camp tripled to score Nelson and Palmisano, giving Sioux City a 5-4 lead. The Explorers got another run when Camp scored on a wild pitch. A two-run homer by Dustin Jones in the eighth inning sealed an 8-4 win for the Explorers.

Charlie Benz (1-0) pitched two innings of relief for Sioux City to get his first win of the year. Ryan Ford (0-5) suffered the loss allowing five runs on seven hits and three walks in five innings of work.
