
Bats Silent as Saints Take Opener

ST. PAUL, MN- The Wichita Wingnuts lost 4-0 to the St. Paul Saints on Friday night at Midway Stadium.
Derek Blacksher kept the Wingnuts in the game for six innings, but Wichita left 11 runners on base while suffering their third shutout loss of the season.
The Saints got off to a fast start, plating three runs in the bottom of the first. With runners on first and third, and after a brief rain delay, Todd Self lifted a sacrifice fly to center that scored Andrew Schmiesing and gave the Saints a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Jeff Eure doubled inside the third base line to score two more runs.
The Saints took a 4-0 lead when Andrew Schmiesing doubled to right-center on a hit-and-run in the fourth inning that scored Steve Butler from first.
Derek Blacksher worked six innings, allowing four runs on six hits. Blacksher struck out five and walked four. Saints' starter Brandon Kintzler pitched seven shutout innings, allowing five hits and striking out four. Justin Young and Doug Hurn combined for two scoreless innings of relief for Wichita.
The Wingnuts and Saints continue their series Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. Left-hander Brad Davis opposes Saints' righty Charlie Ruud.
