Captains Get Back in Win Column with Rout

Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release

SHREVEPORT, La. - After a pair of low-scoring losses, the Shreveport-Bossier Captains took out their frustration on three Grand Prairie AirHogs pitchers Friday night with a season-high 17 runs on 20 hits, as they scored two in the second and six in the third, never looking back in a 17-2 win in front of 1,981 at Fair Grounds Field.

Andres Rodriguez hit a two-run homer, his sixth of the year and third of the week, and Jonathan Reynoso hit a three-run shot, his second of the season, to help back Logan Williamson (2-2), who went seven innings in his first outing back from an eight-game suspension.

Grand Prairie (15-18) actually had the first threat of the game, when Chad Gabriel led off with a triple down the rightfield line in the second. However, Brandon Carter lined the next pitch to short, and Gabriel was caught too far off the bag by shortstop Albert Gonzalez for a double play. After that, the Captains went to work against Matt Green (2-3), who ironically was the winning pitcher in Grand Prairie's 15-2 win at Fair Grounds Field on May 20.

This time the script was flipped on Green, who hit Selwyn Langaigne leading off the bottom of the second. After a forceout, Christopher Garcia singled to put runners at first and third. Joe Urtuzuastegui singled to give the Captains (14-19) the lead, and Albert Gonzalez followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0. After Williamson pitched a 1-2-3 second, Green walked Dwayne White to start the home third. Rodney Medina then singled, and Rodriguez followed with an infield hit that Green made worse by throwing the ball away, allowing White to score and Medina to go to third. A wild pitch brought home Medina, and after a walk to Langaigne, Kevin Griffin and Garcia singled to bring home two more runs. Urtuzuastegui then walked, and Green threw another wild one to score Griffin, before walking Gonzalez to end his night.

The righty pitched just two complete innings, throwing to eight batters without getting an out in the third, and was charged with eight runs, all earned, on seven hits, with three walks, a hit batter and one strikeout. Jeff Jamnik came on and Reynoso hit a sacrifice fly to make it 11-0 and cap the six-run inning.

Shreveport-Bossier added another run in the fourth on an RBI single from Langainge, and picked up two more on base hits from White and Rodriguez in the fifth. The Captains were held scoreless in the sixth, before Grand Prairie got its only two runs in the seventh. With one out, Cesar Nicolas and Gabriel singled, and Brandon Carter was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Albert Gonzalez then misplayed JB Tucker's grounder for an error, allowing two runs to score.

The Captains' lefty departed after that, going seven strong innings and allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits, with two walks and four strikeouts. Robert Romero allowed a hit and a walk in a scoreless eighth before Matt Petty pitched around a one-out base on balls in the ninth.

Rodriguez got the Captains the two runs back in the bottom of the seventh with a towering two-run shot off lefty Aaron Jenkins, before Reynoso lined his down the left field line in the eighth, also against Jenkins. The Captains got their final run when Jose Torres had a pinch-hit single, moved to second on a wild pitch, went to third on an error by third baseman Drew Nicholson and scored on a sacrifice fly by Rodriguez.

Notes: All 10 Captains hitters had at least one hit and one run scored in the blowout, and eight had RBIs, with everyone except Medina and Torres (who had just one at-bat, with the bases empty) driving in at least a run. Reynoso and Rodriguez each had four, and Rodriguez also was 4-for-5...Garcia and Urtuzuastegui each had three hits, with the rookie second baseman enjoying his first career multi-hit game...Garcia and Rodriguez each also scored three times...The six Grand Prairie hits were all from the 3-5 batters, as Garza picked up one, Nicolas had three and Gabriel had two...The Captains had 12 runs on 17 hits in the last three games before this one...The Captains' previous high in runs was 14 on Monday against Pensacola, and the previous high in hits was 17 on June 7 at Sioux Falls.
