Birds done in by six-run first

Sioux City, IA - The Canaries (3-4) fell victim to a six-run first inning at the hands of an Explorer offense that lifted Sioux City (4-3) to a 13-6 win at Lewis & Clark Park on Thursday night.

The Explorers jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first inning. Dan Meier hit a sacrifice fly scoring Ryan Ruiz for the first run of the game. An error by Kyle Kmiecik allowed Julius Thames to score for the 2-0 lead. Then, Kevin Henry doubled to score Ryan Gripp and Chris Grossman singled to score Jorge Moreno making it 4-0. Robert Mendoza doubled to bring in Henry and Grossman for the 6-0 lead.

The Explorers added runs in the second and third innings to extend their lead to 8-0.

The Canaries got on the board in the fourth. Chad Hermansen and Edgard Clemente opened the inning with a pair of walks. Abner Arroyo followed with a double to score Hermansen, and Alexis Hernandez hit a sacrifice fly scoring Clemente to make it 8-2.

In the fifth inning, Ralph Santana singled and scored on a single by Clemente to cut the Explorers lead to 8-3.

Sioux City added a run in the fifth inning on a solo home run by Robert Mendoza and a run in the sixth inning when Meier scored on a groundout by Henry, giving Sioux City a 10-3 lead.

The X's added three runs in the eighth inning. Freddy Guzman singled and scored on a triple by Henry. Mike Richardson followed with a two-run home run for a 13-3 Explorers' advantage.

The Birds made some noise in the ninth. Santana reached on an error and Chad Hermansen hit his second home run of the season, a two-run shot, to make it 13-5. Clemente singled and scored when Arroyo reached on an error for the 13-6 final.

Doug Johnson (0-2) was saddled with the loss. Kieran Mattison (1-1) picked up the win for Sioux City.

The Canaries now head to St. Joseph, MO where they will face the St. Joe Blacksnakes for a three-game series. The Birds return home on Tuesday, May 23 for a three-game series with the St. Paul Saints.
